40lb tumor removed from 82lb woman

BERLIN, Germany — German doctors say they have successfully removed a 40-pound malignant bone tumor from a Saudi Arabian woman.

Berlin surgeon Heinz Zurbruegg said Friday that the 35-year-old had only a few weeks to live when she arrived in Germany for care in September.

But he says that after five operations, no traces remain of the bone tumor that once ballooned from her pelvis and made up about a third of her total body weight. She now weighs 82 pounds.

The patient told reporters at a news conference Friday she couldn't believe the size of the tumor that had been removed and added she felt reborn.

The medical team said the patient was now well enough to return home.

They added that if follow-up exams continued to show no sign of a tumor, the next steps would be to reconstruct the woman's partially removed pelvis and give her an artificial hip

There's a link to photos on the link but they're not too pretty so I'm not posting them :P The first ones aren't bad but there's one where you can actually see a tumor.

My brother had a bone tumor underneath his scapula that was removed a few years back. He started feeling a little back pain when he was about 15 and by the time he was 18 if you looked at his shirtless back you could see one side was a bit raised in comparison to the other side, as the tumor was pushing his scapula up. The tumor was about the size of a large egg. He said it was the most pain he ever felt in his life the post surgery recovery for that (and he's had half a dozen broken bones, has had a loaded truck pass over his foot breaking his toes, had appendicitis and a cervical injury from jiu jitsu).

I am glad that many of those people seem to have recovered well from their tumor removals, although the chinese guy really has an unlucky condition.

I assume fozzie is correct about it being a neck injury unless there's something she wants to tell us about her brother :P

I think it makes more sense to have a neck injury from martial arts than a cervix injury

Unless he/she got hit with a johnny cage style 'Package Check".
