if you are an immigrant to the US with a green card, yes indeed you will need a passport. US citizens however legally do not. It is better to have it tho.

Dont need the passport untill the end of this year.

The passport requirement is being put forth by the US. The US government is the one requiring passports for foreigners and US residents/citizens to enter the US.

CANADA IS NOT REQUIRING PASSPORTS OF CANDIAN OR AMERICAN CITIZENS TO ENTER INTO CANADA.

Resident aliens of the US (green card holders) must also produce a passport.

It will be very interesting to see what does happen. Canadians going to the US without a passport will likely just be straightly denied entry. American citizens on the other hand can not be denied entry back into the US. If the US starts denying entry to Americans without passports then I would think that we (Canadian Border) will have start denying Americans without passports as there will be no guarantee that they'll get back into their own country. Just a lot of unnecessary craziness if you ask me - there are enough people out here already trying to cross the border that don't even have the common sense to bring any form of ID.

No, as of right now a Canadian citizen doe not need a passport to enter the US from Canada. I don't think it has been confirmed with the US govenrment yet when they will require passports. The Canadian government is trying to negotiate with the US in regards to this issue due to the HUGE economical impact it will have on both countries.

it is not currently legally required, however it is much much easier if you do have a passport, and has been for several years. Even prior to 9/11, I was told a few times they'd be easier on me if I would just get a passport, which turned out to be true on a couple of visits. Then they got annoyed with me for travelling so much for business :P

Americans travelling outside of the US will soon be required to show a US passport to get back into the US. Which is a bit crazy, but as Canada AFAIK is the only country still that does not require a passport of them, its better to just suck it up and go get one already. Or don't go anywhere.
