Interview: English or Vietnamese

I'm probably getting ahead of myself, but will it be better to have my wife speak English or Vietnamese at the interview? Her English is 90% fluent - she works for a Swiss multinational and uses English on a daily basis. I've heard rumors that it's a bad idea to use English at the interview.....?

Thanks,

Phong

English, it'll only help your case. A matter of fact, the CO forgot to ask my wife to raise her right hand and swear she's telling the truth, because..... ......I told my wife to start a conversation in order to break the ice and create a more relaxed tempo (we're all humans) and it worked, they started talking about her passport stamps.............then he said," Oh by the way, I forgot to tell you to raise your right hand".......It was smooth sailing from then onward.

You trust the interpretor who works at the Consulate to translate your fiance's words correctly?

Your fiance's English is 90% fluent, then my vote is: speak english.

Kim spoke English during her interview, it turned into a conversation/chat more so than an interview. Plus, for folks who are american born, with limited vietnamese language skill, it's an extra plus for their fiancee to speak English at the interview, showing them how you two commuincate in the past, present and in the future.

Good luck and NO, you're not getting ahead of yourself, the interview is coming any day now, fast!!!

I have been following posts on this forum long enough for me to that if your fiancee spoke English at the interview, her chance of getting a visa would be 99.99% ... I have absolutely no faith or trust in the translator. I knew at Loan's interview, the translator must have said something else to the CO and the result was 9 months of agonizing AR ... Speak English, talk directly to the CO, screw the Vietnamese staff ...

I used to be indecisive. Now I am just not sure ...

I vote for English. After all, the person that will conduct the interview is an english speaking American.

If they happen to know any Vietnamese language, it is probably not very much.

Any chance of having a written interview?

We write each other practically every day via IM, because the lines where she lives (Vinh Long) are not good enough to talk on, so her written comprehension is much better than spoken.

btw... are there any other vj members in Vinh Long?

Get her a cell phone if it will work in that area and you can chat for alittle every day. the costs run about 15-35 cents a min but that is not useing something like skype Just calling cards If you use T3 you get a statement with names and #'s so it is good for proof of the relationship

Good Luck

Have her enroll in an English class. The more practice the better. She becomes more comfortable speaking with many people. Then she will get over any embarrassment factor.

The question is: where to go for Good english instructor.

Kim's experience with English courses in HCM City is OK at best and unacceptable at worse. There are english learning centers everywhere, hiring "Backpackers" to have conversation with students during "conversation or dialog" sessions. Horrible, some of these backpackers/travelers are broke so took the job to make quick cash. They have no manner, speaking BAD language and slang out of their you know what...

We still couldn't find a GOOD english learning center in VN. Anyone has any recommendation. BTW, the "OK at best" learning center we found is the Australian school near VO THI SAU ave. However, the instructor is Australian so the accent will be a bit different!

But in any event, speak english to her. Written Interview is NOT and NEVER in the consulate playbook, unless your fiance/beneficiary have speech impediment or hearing problem. I never tried. But like STL_HCM said, it's a LOOOOOONG shot!

My fiancee studies at Hoi Viet My - Vietnam USA Society English Training Service Center. She seems to be enjoying it and tells me this is one of the top rated English schools in HCMC. The facilities are modern, clean and air-conditioned. She goes to the campus in Q.Tan Binh. There is also a large campus in Q.3 on Nam Ky Khoi Ngia.

There is also ILA Vietnam.
