Unrestricted Social Security Card after getting Conditional Green Card?

Hello Everyone,

Hope everyone is great. I had a question. I received my Conditional Green Card last month. Prior to that I had applied for a Social Security Card based on my EAD. I got my SS card with the notation "Valid for work only with DHS authorization" . My question is now that I have received my Conditional Green Card (based on marriage to a USC) can I apply for a Social Security card with this notation removed i.e the unrestricted one. Or is the unrestricted Social Security Card only for those who get the permanent resident card i.e the 10 year one and not the Conditional One? Also whats the difference between the unrestricted SSN and the one with "valid for work....." notation on it?

Thanks everyone in advance for your answers.

Have a great day!

You are a now a Lawful PERMANENT Resident just one with a conditional card, you can apply for a replacement SSN card without the notation. Just wait a few weeks for USCIS to updaye the data base that SSA uses to confirm your status.

Thanks for the reply YuandDan. I was just confused as to wether a conditional permanent resident can apply for an unrestricted ssn as the permanent residency is conditional for 2 years after which you have to remove conditions unlike a permanent resident whose residency is permanent even if thier card expires the status dosent. Thank you for the info!

To further the question:

Do you just go to SSA office with your green card, SSN card, and ask to reapply? How long till you get the card?

Thanks!

All you need is your Form I-551 (Green Card). Depends on how long it takes them to verify your immigration status. If they can do it while you are at the office and process the application right away you should have your new SSN card within 14 days. Otherwise you could be waiting weeks and sometimes months.

One other thing DO NOT let them have your old SSN card until you receive the new one, Say the dog ate it. LOL

Okay, thanks!

That was my other question... i don't care how long it takes just as long as we can keep the old card in the interim

Make a trip to the local Social Security Office.  If you applied for it with the DS-260 then it can take 4 to 6 weeks.   If you applied for it in person then it takes 1 to 2 weeks.
