Moving companies - what's required?

Hi everyone!

First post, of many, I'm sure... VJ has already answered many of my questions, but I haven't found a lot on how people have moved their stuff across the border. I have a rather short move between Vancouver and Boise but I'm not willing to do the whole U-Haul thing, so I'm looking at hiring a moving company to do everything.

I won't have too much to ship (1 bedroom and 1 office worth of furniture and some boxes of personal stuff) so I'm not too worried on cost. What I'd like to know is how all the paperwork...well...works

I'm thinking that I'll pack and prepare everything before I leave and have the movers pick it up after I arrive but I need to know what to do before I go and what can be done after.

How soon after leaving can I send for my stuff? After I activate my K1, or does it have to be after the wedding?

And finally, can anyone recommend a moving company that has worked for them in the past? They all *say* they can do cross border moves, but some seem more organised than others! lol

Thanks in advance everyone!

Michael

Michael,

Welcome to VJ! Many of us are right about at that same point. Here is another thread that might help. I'm not certain moving companies are mentioned, but here's an idea of what you'll need once you cross over!

Good luck! :)

Event Date

ROC

9/24/11 - Mailed I-751 packet to CSC

9/26/11 - NOA1 Receipt Date

9/28/11 - Check cashed

10/1/11 - NOA1 arrived in mail

3/19/12 - RFE

5/3/12 - RoC APPROVED!!!

Hi and welcome,

Once you have chosen a moving company, they will tell you everything you need, but most will need a copy of your visa and a form

3299

They can move your stuff after you have crossed the border (activated your visa).

Thanks July! I had read through that thread before, but most of it seems to dwell on crossing with your stuff, not hiring a company to do it after you're already there. I suppose I should just phone a bunch of different movers and see what I can come up with...but I was hoping someone here had some actual experience with movers that I might learn from!

So much to do...

Here's a link to another recent thread. It wanders a bit off topic but it contains links to other threads where you will find all the information you need. Link

The moving company will tell you what to do and take care of all your paperwork. All you have to do once you've arrived in the US is send them a copy of the I-94 and your visa. It's all in those threads. You don't have to wait until you're married. You can do it the same day if you like. What they do is hold your belongings until they have enough for a full truckload going to the same area of the country, then bring it all down in one shipment. Each company will have a minimum charge and weight, no matter how small the amount of belongings you are shipping.
