Thanks in advance

I moved to the U.S. with a K1 in January. I didn't take ANY household stuff, since I might as well go to IKEA here and buy it for "cheap" compared to sending it by DHL. I only had personal stuff like pictures, books, gifts etc, and I sent the my first 20 kg package with DHL a week before I left Germany. Try to get a hold on a thick moving or tv/hifi box and buy that silver duct tape from the Baumarkt to secure all the edges. The package arrived 3 weeks after I sent it and it was in a very good condition. I wrote an inventory list and put one in the package and a copy of it in one of those self-adhesive transparent pouches they give you at the post office that can be attached to the package. I tried to be precise with the list, but when I had 5 books, I just put in 5 books and not the title etc. The list included an estimated value of the things, and since everything is most likely used, you shouldn't go to high with that. I tried to estimate the value with comparing what you would get for it on a flee market. My mother has the rest of my stuff and sent one more package to me in March (10kg) and the last one will come in June. For my books she is gonna use so called M-Beutel. Look it up on the Deutsche Post Website if you need more information about that.

Hope I was able to help you,

Chibby :star:

Hi...I can tell only how much the fee is sending it from Germany: up to 10 Kg= 42 EUR

up to 20 Kg = 62 EUR

its a lot of money..but taking all your stuff with you on the flight is more expensive and quiet uncomfortable

Thanks, maybe I should call DHL I tried getting an online quote for sending a parcel and it came back as 350 EUR so after picking myself up off the floor, I though about throwing everything away but I still have too much stuff I want to keep.

Well I live only 30km from German border maybe i could drive a couple of parcels there, thanks.

Have you considered shipping it via sea mail through the postal service (Deutsche Post, Royal Mail, etc)? It takes longer but often works out to be a lot cheaper

Thanks, just checked Austrian postal service to USA: 12 EUR for the package plus 3 EUR per kg so I think I will go this way.

Hi! I did that, too, when I was moving beginning of March. I started to send the frist box before Christmas which was a bad decision. It took a long time but it all arrived.

I can understand that you want to bring a lot of stuff. I tried to give some stuff to my sister and mom and to sell a lot of stuff. But there is always stuff you want to keep or it is a waste of money leaving it at your parents and nobody uses it.

Get good boxes for shipping overseas they might not be the cheapest but some of my boxes had big bumps and almost holes even I had the good boxes so be careful shipping stuff that can break easily. Wrap it well!!!!

I started to pack the boxes with heavy stuff like books, pictures, etc. And then I just put some small light stuff in there. There is always some space for things you first think about leaving but as there is that little space left...just dump it in there.

I didn't have any custom problems. I claimed it as "Belongings" put my and my fiancés name on the address and had a list included with everything in there. You don't have to go too much in detail. Just say "books" and then the number. I used flee market prices, too. Just think about selling that stuff. Or for personal pictures I said "0 Euro", because this is nothing you can sell.

I put that list together on the computer and added the printed sheet. On the custom form I just put the total weight and amount and said "please see attached sheet".

It's not a big deal...

Good luck for moving.
