The issue is as follows:

My husband on his tax returns have zero income due to being a student during last four years. So inorder for his parent to be my sponsor which form should we use I-864 or I-864a if they are the members of the same household?

My understanding is that my husband will have to file I-864 anyway, but what about his parent?

A relative who has the same principal residence as the sponsor and is related to the sponsor as a spouse, adult child, parent, or sibling;

Please have your husband study the I-864 instructions and ask any questions that remain after doing so. It's so much easier to get it right that way.
