Yes! That's it! Crunchy water! Evidently in English, it's called a pomelo, then.

As a footnote, one sometimes must be careful writing Vietnamese on an English keyboard. In the instant circumstance, we understand "BUOI" to mean bưởi. However, if you spelled it buồi, it might have a quite different meaning, and I might be offended you called me that without provocation. :jest:

Oh, and by the way, thanks Chuck. That's been bugging me for a while. Now I can rest easy.

Buoi and grapefruit are the same thing.i thought you were referring a fruit that was a family of buoi, thats why i was sitting there trying to figure it out. Buoi arent yellow, they're green on the outside and pink on the inside

this has to be one of the most entertaining threads I have read on here in a long time. I have eaten a lot of fruit on my 3 trips here and like some of them. And I took my extended Vietnamese family out tonight to Al Fresco's. It was Really good. Heading home in two day :( But had a great time.

So, let's bring this full circle--sort of. It's been nearly a year now, and pretty much all I've eaten for a year is phở, bún, mì, và cơm. With various meats and vegetables thrown in for variety. Some variety. Just a tad of variety. OK, very little variety. I blame this at least partially on Texas BBQ, or rather, the poor timing of our visit there. It was probably a bad time to introduce her to huge, fatty, rich slabs of meat, the like of which she'd never seen or tasted before. It was too much to take in at once. She absolutely hated it.

Now, a year later, she is much less negative on many American foods, but she won't touch anything that even mentions the word barbecue. I have to be careful to refer to that outdoor cooking appliance as a grill, or just forget it.

But still, we eat phở, bún, mì, and cơm. I refuse to eat miến any more because I hate those slimy noodles. Did I really eat that big a variety before, or am I just stuck in a different, Vietnamese rut now? I honestly don't remember. I can say for sure that cooking is pretty much like any other skill. If you don't do it often, you lose some of your skill at it. I am amazed at how easily I can screw something up now.

So, is Vietnamese food really that boring? Or is it just the cook in our house? She never really cooked all that much before. At her house, her sister-in-law does 99% of the cooking every day. She's come a looooong way in a year. Still, I hunger for some Texas BBQ. How about you folks?

There is more to Vietnamese food. If you read couple post back in this thread chuckandkim lists the abundant amount of food Vietnamese crave for and people have added to his list. You wife might not be showing you the variety vietnam has to offer. if you do a simple search on google you can find out the abundance of vietnamese food. Also you gotta realize that vietnam is still a poor country and the masses still eat rice or rice product, such as bun, and use it as a filler to save on buying a lot meat. Lots of people can't afford to steak and potatoes in Vietnam. My wife sometimes has a hard time figure out what to cook everyday at the house but she manages to make the best meals for me. I am so glad and lucky to have a wife cook so well.

See, that's kind of what I thought, it's operator error. My family is not poor, and can eat whatever they wish. My wife never really had to cook in her life until this year. Back in 'Nam, chị Hương kept the family fed, and I don't remember such repetition. In fact, chị Hương boasts that she knows 1000 dishes by heart. Chị Hương is also bốc phết.

Thanks for the reply. By the way, I had bún for dinner tonight. With bean sprouts and beef.

I'm coming back to Vietnam to visit my wife in exactly 1 month. It's gonna be so much fun. I guess I'm going to try her cooking skill since she did tried to take a cooking class. A+ for the wife who knows how to cook. Other restriction may vary  .

I'm trying to get my wife to feel safe breaking the VN cooking laws. We will have some pork and I will say "that's good, we should cook chicken that way." At first the reaction was just "no." That tradition is tough to break. Or maybe she just learned things one way and is scared to make a change and have it not come out right. Isn't that what pizza is for? When dinner goes south / is burnt and everyone is hungry?

One day I decided to cook something that she had marinated, without oil and some salt filled soup base that she loves. The look of skepticism on her face as great. She KNEW it was going to taste bad. I dished and dashed until it was done. She had already pulled out the soup stock to fix her dinner as she knew mine was ruined. To her surprise, she found that what I cooked was very flavorful and less oily. The soup got put back in the fridge. :P

To Linh's credit she keeps trying new things. American cooking is more than just Lotteria burgers and KFC chicken. We seem to go in phases for dinner. She has Viet almost everyday at work. It all works. I'm sure on the next trip back she will up the ante on the Viet foods that she didn't think that I would try previously.

And we fed my mom Bun Bo Hue for dinner on Mother's Day. I guess that means we are a blended family.

Anyone going back to Vietnam this summer? I'm going on June 11th. Just wondering how many of us are going back to see the other half. It's gonna be fruit season there and I can't wait to devour all of my favorite. I heard that "Vu Sua" is gone by the time I get there but it's okay because "Mang cut =mangosteen" going to make up for it. Mouth is all watery talking about it. YUUMMMM!!!
