I love to eat, especially good foods! Nothing wrong with a good juicy burger or a rare-cook steak.

However, If I travel 10,000 miles to VN, burst my butt on tiny airline seat for 24hrs and some, that last thing I want is a burger, pizza, spagettie, pizza, KFC chicken, hotdogs or tacos/nachos. I eat these every week, month, year. Don't like, don't hate, but they don't give me an URGE to seek for place to taste it when i'm in Saigon. I can't justify paying $10 for a wanna-be burger or BBQ ribs by some nobody who think he can cook a better burger than me! Nor I justify to pay $25 for a piece of meat that has been frozen and traveled as far as I am to be on my plate (US steaks) as some suggested. Not about money, it's all about GOOD TASTE baby! I would feel cheated on my part, my effort!

My motto on eating out: when you're, order what you CANNOT make at home or avoid dishes you can have everyday at the dinner table.

So list of things I want to eat when i'm in Saigon:

Bún Bò Huế

Bún Chả Cá

Bún Than

Bún Riêu

Bún Thịt Nướng

Mì Quảng

Mì Gỏ 2 dzắt (has to be served by a chinese man with a Noodle Cart - Xe Hu Tieu Mi)

Phở Tái Nạm Gân Vè Dòn (the thin sliced steaks are unbelieable in VN)

Bánh Canh Giò Heo

Bánh Canh Cua

Bánh Bèo

Bánh Khọt

Bánh Cuốn "Tây Hồ" (near Đinh Tiên Hoàng)

Tàu Hủ Nứơc Gừng

Chè Trôi Nước

Nghêu Sò Ốc Hến Cua (mussles, clams, escargots, stonecrabs)

Rau Muống Xào Tỏi (this is the exception, I can make this at home but I will order everytime I go out, just too much effort to plug and prepare this dish)

Lẩu Dê

Dê Nướng Chao

Tôm Càng Nướng

Bánh Hỏi Thịt Quay

Phá Lấu

Cháo Lòng

Cháo Huyết

Cháo Vịt

Gỏi Vịt

Tiết Canh Vịt

Nước Mía

Nước Chanh Giây

Chuột đồng

Nhím

Heo rừng

Thịt Nai

Thịt Bò Lá Lốt

Cá kèo chiên chấm mắm me

Cá kèo nướng

Cá trê đồng nướng

Ghẹ

SAO TỰ NHIÊN CHẢY NƯỚC MIẾNG THẾ NÀY? :)

YUP, that's all folks.... Anyone suggests anything else, add to the list. BTW, Thịt Chó is NOT on my list, have no desire for it!

Well truth is, after about three weeks of eating all these great foods, I'd def. want a philly cheesesteak by the time I get back home. So just like anything else, too much of a good thing will be bad! All thing in moderation...

I guess you didn't go for the exotic foods (thịt chó, thịt rừng v.v...). I went to Làng Nướng in Sài Gòn and it was very nice. Lots of people were there and the food is either cook at your table or they do it for you. But the best food is what my mother in law's food. She made some of the best vietnamese food. I've gained 5kg when I came back from Vietnam.

Hi guys, just wanted to comment quick. Reading these posts makes me miss Hai Au and VN. so much. I love to eat VN. food when I am there, but after a couple weeks I have to have something American. She lives in Bien Hoa so I don't get a chance to get to Saigon to try the food there. We tried a hamburger in Bien Hoa and it was bad. The local pizza joint owned by a French guy was so-so. When I talk to her on cam next time, I am going to have her explain some of the food on list that ChuckandKim posted.

To hniHnitsuJ, good luck on your interview coming up. NVC recieved our DS-230 and I-864 last week so we are hoping for fast approval and interview date like you guys recieved.

Thanks to all for the stories and info, it makes me miss Hai Au more but also helps pass the time till we can be together again. Good luck on your journeys and God Bless!! Bye for now.

Gỏi Đu Đủ + Khô Bò + Tương Dấm

Bún Măng Vịt.....

Man, I'm so hungry thinking of them....

Làng Nướng???? Is this new, I would have to try it.... still no "thịt chó", i'm too chicken to try.

If its Làng Nướng on Hai Ba Trung and Nguyen Dinh Chieu Across from Hoang Yen then that place closed and turned into another restuarant that's more formal, indoors, and has air conditioning thought. Not the type of restaurant where you can grill anymore, and I don't see them advertise Chuột đồng or any of the others anymore so I think Làng Nướng is no more. Hmmmm Deep Fried Vit Lon, that sounds healthy...

"Chuot Dong" is something you gotta try once you're on the country side of Vietnam. If you're in the big cities, I don't think anyone would want to try it. It could be "Chuot Cong" and that's a NO NOOO. I've never try snake when I was there. I tried Ell though.

I'm with you, very skeptical regarding "Field Rats" dish served near by city restaurant. There aren't too many rice fields left around Saigon, do the math, the chance of you getting rice field rats is almost nothing to none.

yeah about rats, I saw some HUGEEEE rats when I was eating at this one place. We were in Tay Ninh and wasn't thrive on the fancy restaurants there. We went for the down to earth kind of place. Sure enough, we went to one and oh my goodness, the food was fantastic. It was great but when I look up at the corner, there he was. It was like about the size of a cat and it was freaking out running and trying to climb up the wall. I was freaking out also but the people eating there act like it's nothing to them. Freaking me out now that i'm talking about it. I'm wondering if the food that I was eating got something to do with that. ewwwggggg

The only safe thing I see on there with out a doubt if it's the real thing is the "Spring Rolls" :)

I've heard that they imitate lots of meat if they dont have them. Very scary but oh well, you gotta try to trust people sometime. Do you have any pictures of you guys eating these exotic food? hehhehe Did your wife freak out? Maybe not because she's born and raised there.

both of the rat is good to eat. just make sure you go to the right place that cooks it properly. chuot dong is smaller and crispier and taste like chicken. chuot cong is bigger so when its cooked, its not as crispy as chuot dong. its more like a small heo quay. the manager told us that chuot cong is suppose to be sweeter and juicier but there really was no difference. overall the chuot dong is much better
