So getting back to internet forums etc. How does the Admin find duplicte accounts by matching IP's if someone has a dynamic address? I understand that Uncle Sam can get any information he wants by going thru the channels, but what about elsewhere?

Not sure what you mean by duplicate accounts but if you mean, how would the ISP, or any other service provider, discover if someone is logging in at 2 different locations and sharing an account??

All account logins are monitored and logged. Time of login to logout and perhaps, the amount of data transmitted as well...

Each account can also be set to allow only one login with alerts generated if its attempted at a 2nd location.

They did catch that single mom college student in Duluth for sharing MP3's on a P to P network and hit her with something like a $250,000 fine. So glad to hear our FBI is protecting us against such heinous crimes. Also a kid near Milwaukee was arrested for using that b-#-m-B word on a site.

Our time line for CR1 visa took only 5 months and 1 week or 156 days; from the filing the I-130 on the 03-12-2009 to Approval of NOA2 on the 05/13/2009, then Interview on the 08/18/2009 at Manila, Philippines. We had a daughter on the 11-12-2010 named AISHA JOY means HAPPY LIFE.a1_opt-1.jpga2_opt-1.jpga3_opt-1.jpg

How can the forum administrator find duplicate accounts if you have a dynamic IP address? My IP address will be different tomorrow, so if I create a new account then, how can it be matched to my current one?

Your IP address might NOT be different tomorrow. All depends on how fast your ISP ages out the addresses.

However, your MAC address will ALWAYS be the same. As will your ISP's gateway address and the MAC for that port.

ANY traffic that flows from your ISP will have that IP and MAC no matter what address your computer will have. After that its simply a matter of searching the IPS's DHCP logs...

Well, when you also logged on using your username and password there's a possibility that the IP will be logged as well.

Understood. But the forum admin also knows ones MAC address? I know the ISP has all of that info, and I know that an IP can be logged. If I have a dynamic IP address, how can the forum admin know it's a duplicate account?

I'm not asking because of being banned. I am really just curious how this all works. If my IP address changes everyday, how would they know a new user id was me?

The MAC address are built into the router/switch forwarding table from your NIC. However, FORUM Admin has no access to the router/switch forwarding table which is linked to the ISP. Although, the IP can be determined publicly. IP is a different mechanism entirely. It's used as a host address assignment throughout the internet world. Each ISP routers will route the IP to wherever the destination is to be. And, within the router (today they are hybrids switch and router) there's a forwarding table that is generated that keep track of the MACs and Local IP. Only WAN-IP is public. Local IP is not. The router has a NAT that maps the WAN-IP and concatenating a port number to a local IP.

blah blah blah....so complicated

The Admin here at VJ would not know but might be able to guess it was you if they log IP source addresses...

With required legal papers you could be tracked down though. Just take some time is all...
