New, deadly swine flu hits Mexico, U.S., Mexican govt asks people to not shake hands or kiss

From Discover Mag:

The incident has brought back memories of another swine flu outbreak in 1976 among army recruits at Fort Dix, New Jersey, which taught public health officials a tough lesson. That winter, 13 men got sick and one died of what proved to be swine influenza viruses–viruses that were thought to be similar to the one responsible for the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. U.S. officials ordered the manufacture of swine flu virus vaccine and the country proceeded to launch a mass immunization program that saw upwards of 40 million people injected with the vaccine. The feared pandemic never occurred. But the vaccine appeared to trigger a high level of cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a type of paralysis, and thousands of vaccine recipients filed injury claims.

I was in Navy boot camp in 1976. They gave all of us an experimental version of the vaccine. Half of our troop got very sick. We were in effect the guinea pigs for the rest of the country. I was flat on my back for a week. The latrine in our barracks was not a pretty sight.

But they are smarter than dogs and we don't ever think of eating Fido.

Well, some of us, anyway.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

sounds like a good time to really avoid illegals.

Um, if they are already here there is no reason they should have the disease. And, I'm not sure if you noticed or not but AJ posted a link saying it's in parts of Cali and Texas. So, let's avoid those people instead since they actually have the disease and have been exposed to it.

Nice try Charles. You've just joined the ranks of PeeJay. What a wonderful accomplishment for you.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

They believe this is spreading person to person.

Three more Southern Californians have been diagnosed with swine flu.

...

The new local victims of swine flu were a man and his daughter in San Diego County, and a 41-year-old woman in Imperial County. Two teenagers in San Antonio, Texas have also become infected.

Health officials say the strain of the virus has never been seen before in the country.

Dr. Wilma Wooten is San Diego County's public health officer. She says it appears there's human-to-human spread.

"We have had person-to-person spread with the father and the daughter," says Wooten, "And also with the two teenagers in Texas, they were in the same school. So that also indicates person-to-person transfer."

Alert Issued After Serious Mystery Ailment Affects Canadians Returning From Mexico

Thursday April 23, 2009

The Public Health Agency of Canada is looking into a growing number of reports about Canadians returning from the south and central parts of [Mexico] with a severe respiratory illness.

The mystery malady has puzzled experts both here and in Mexico, who have yet to identify exactly what it is. The ailment seems to primarily affect young adults who went on their trips healthy but failed to return in the same condition.

The symptoms begin as a flu-like illness and rapidly deteriorate to respiratory distress and breathing difficulties.

Doctors in Mexico are well aware of its presence. At least 20 people have died there so far - mostly patients between the ages of 25 and 44. Hundreds more have been sent to hospital, with some winding up on ventilators.

...

Symptoms of the mystery illness include:

* Fever,

* Cough,

* Sore throat,

* Muscle and joint pain,

* Shortness of breath.

It turns into severe breathing problems about five days after the initial infection surfaces.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Nice try Bootylicious, but far be it from anyone to state the obvious...a country that does not control its own border does not control its own destiny. And when you have open borders with no restriction or inspection on entry then this is very pertinent to this O/P. Ditto for the people that feel they don't have to be subjected to inspection (i.e.: illegal aliens). Obviously your background on this subject precludes you from being entirely objective in this matter.

In case you are ignorant of standard practices of disease control...it involves inspection and quarantine of those infected to contain the spread of disease. People that float over on an innertube at midnight bypass that protocol. Sorry for having to state the obvious.

Just another reason to secure our border. ;)

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

There are no 'bacteria' secure borders Peejay. However I am sure it pleases you to imagine that illegal immigrants would be the sole cause of any potential outbreak of flu sweeping the USA as they cross the borders on their inntertubes.

Quite honestly the most obvious way to get it is to travel in an airplane with someone who has the virus. Quarantines are not that easy to maintain.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

This is scary. We're only about 60 miles north of San Diego.

Supposedly the most common way that flu gets transmitted is from touching things that other people have touched (door handles etc).

Especially if they're brown. Watch out for those brown door knobs.
