Private,

Would you be more or less likely to meet that deadline if you believed that the punishment of missing the deadline would be removal of your testicles sans anesthesia, versus the current slap on the wrist at review time?

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

I'll be sure to go have another cup of tea BY, it's always nice to have a cup and be mildly entertained by your hysteria.

Likewise, it is always nice to read your nope you are wrong response.

I could seriously write a script for you ad your buds. That way it would save you all the trouble of responding.

Not much to it.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Even if it did 'work' in terms of obtaining information - which is far from being demonstrated with any clarity - the other point remains, is the USA a civilized Nation that solves its problems using the legitimate tools at its disposal, or does it wish to descend back into being the type of Nation that, somewhat confusingly, the Iraq war sought to eliminate?

What I don't understand is why is there this explicit assumption that torture works in the big picture scheme of things...

Because it does? Why wouldn't it?

Obviously, if you torture some poor sap who doesn't know anything, he'll tell you whatever

you want to hear just to make you stop.

At the same time, if you torture someone who has important information, chances are they

will tell you the truth.

Hey hey. I was thinking about you. Happened to catch a bit of wife swap the other week. ####### is wrong with people in Jersey. Apart from the guys wife being atrociously ugly, with those dog ugly lips, she had attitude and thought others are actually jealous of her. moron.

Yeah I can see how well the Cleo approach is working for the US in terms of crime, violence and homicide.

I have nothing to do with the Criminal Justice System in the US BY, and quite honestly if it was up to me, I would make some huge changes, not least getting rid of the one strike and you are out policy for drug possession. Talk about lunacy.

It goes back to people cursing the justice system because our courts won't sentence someone to be flogged or mutilated a la Saudi Arabia. There's no logic to it - its all emotion and outrage.

Assuming these terrorists have ideological beliefs, there is every reason to believe they would hold onto any and all information that they possess and accept the torture as a method of martyrdom to the cause.

No, that's not my point. What I'm wondering is why people are labouring under the assumption that the fear of being "tortured" somehow prevents terrorism.

What? I've never heard that torture was a deterrent for terrorists. I certainly never made that point.

Nobody knows of other wars where POW treatment were a big issue?

I know it's not in your talking points folks but you'd think someone, anyone would find a historical parallel especially if this is such an all-consuming issue. If it happened before 2001 it just isn't relevant.

Again - that wasn't my point.

Fear of torture is not much of a deterrent factor, I agree; at the same time, announcing to the world

that "America does not torture" only emboldens the enemy.

How?

Let's assume, you know for the sake of argument that the prime motivation of a terrorist is not so much to get caught, but to seek to further their cause using some extreme act of violence in order to proclaim their message, the use of torture or not by the 'enemy' ceases to have any relevance whatsoever.

How?

Because now they know if they get caught they get to go to a cushy American prison with color TV, a gym, balanced nutritious meals and climate control. At least adding the possibility of having their balls ripped out by the jaws of a pitbull balanced that smoewhat. As it stands now, without torture, an American prison is the next best thing to jannat and it's 72 virgins.
