I've been thinking about it. Spoke to my wife too. Am starting to think the concept of perseverance when there is no chance of winning may not exist in desi culture, lol. Right now I'm googling Gandhi-era Hindi language slogans. There's gotta be something there, who ever thought the half naked fakir would win?

I found a Hindi song, called Lakshya (means "goal" or "objective"), sung by Shankar Mahadevan. Here are some of the lyrics... not an easy way to say what you want, but this is the best I could find.

Himmat se jo koi chale, dharti hile qadmon tale,

Tu chal yunhi ab subha-o-shaam,

Rukna, jhukna nahin tera kaam,

Paayega jo lakshya hai tera,

Lakshya toh har haal mein paana hai.

Translation:

He who is brave, for whom it doesn't matter if the earth shakes beneath him,

who keeps going day and night,

who does not stop and do not bow,

he will attain his objective,

he will attain his goal at any cost.

Ok, that's the long answer. Short answer, the last line. "Lakshya har haal mein paana hai" means you must achieve your goal at all costs.

never giving up even when there is no chance of winning .... in tagalog, this would be the direct translation of the phrase... huwag kang susuko kahit hindi mo matamo ang tagumpay...

if we were to use the word perseverance then the direct translation would be... "tiyaga"

For German I didn't want to do a literal translation - sondern etwas Idiomatisches.

I was thinking:

wo es Leben gibt, gibt es Hoffnung

What do you think? If you think that sucks or is incorrect or is indeed more literal rather that idiomatic, I wont be offended.

I did not want to use the words kaempfen or streben or anything like that.

The Bierkaai (or Bierkade), part of the 'Oudezijds Voorburgwal', near the 'Oude Kerk' was an infamous street in Amsterdam where very rowdy people lived who were known as mean streetfighters. To go up against them would be a lost cause.
