Why not gather the info yourself and post what you have done here (making sure to look at the completed forms for examples if you have never filled out your forms before) and then depending on the feedback you get ... then make your decision. Take one day to read through the guides and about the first three pages of this particular forum..... I think you'll be fine.

I am in the process of doing this step myself ... plus I did the K1 myself ... with the support of everyone here. Our case was bona fide and straightforward and we needed a co-sponsor. However --- if you want to spend the moolah, then I'll tell ya what. I'll only charge you half and I'd be happy to fill out that form for ya and look over your evidence. Hell... I'll even write your cover letter!!! There's a sample of that here too, by the way.

All that being said... be prepared for a year's wait or more ESPECIALLY if you are filing through VSC. Your wife will stress that entire time. Will the $2K prevent her from giving herself ulcers worrying about it?

Thanks Guys.... You guys gave me some great advise. I am not giving the lawyer even a penny now. I have to slog my butt off to make that money and he will make it in 15 mins by preying on our uncertainties.

I printed the guides and the examples forms. I feel comfortable reading in the paper rather than in the computer and filled out my application and helped my SO to do it. I am going to continue doing all the process by myself. No way to pay all that money to a lawyer for a work that I can do by myself.

Just read everything and you will be fine. Encourage to your wife to read the docs too.

This is actually really good advice. Most people feel less worried/stressed if they feel they have some control over the situation. Arming yourself with knowledge and actually knowing what has gone into your application is a form of taking control.

Why not go with your spouse to the consulatation with the attorney (I would assume that is free of charge) and ask the attorney what they see as the challenges in your case. And also have them explain what they will do for you.

After hearing the attorney explain their role, you and your spouse could then discuss whether you feel that you are up to the task on your own or not.

It's your decision. People have different skill levels and comfort levels, as well as different levels of complexity in their cases, so there's no one right answer for everyone.

However, if there's any part of the process that you can do without a lawyer, I'd say the I-751 is it, assuming yours is a legitimate marriage that is still ongoing, and you've been living together since you got the green card. It's not like an initial visa, where if you make a little mistake it could cost you a long time of separation. Unlike a visa or naturalization case, there aren't complex rules of admissibility or eligibility with a bunch of special cases that are likely to trip you up. The only legal issue at hand in the I-751 is that you have to demonstrate that the marriage was not entered for the purpose of obtaining an immigration benefit. You're already here, and the consequences of a delay in I-751 processing aren't that severe. The I-751 form itself is very basic and straightforward. The serious effort is all in gathering the supplemental materials, and you're going to have to do that whether you hire a lawyer or not.

I filled my paper work by my self. If your case is straight forward, you can do it by yourself, and if you need help you can always contact Visa journey forums...

I think that $2200 is a highway robbery. And if you want him/her to be in the interview, you will pay more money. Gime a break, the process is expansive as it is. At this stage, unless your case is complicated, the lawyer won't do something you can not do yourself.

Good luck

I agree it is highways robbery! No need for a lawyer! make sure you research first before you go and jump into it. But if you are not confident then go hire yourself a lawyer. GL!
