Hey all - couldn't find my original thread where I moped about Target turning me down and then even my own bank on a joint application with my husband.

The update on both situations was:

Target - I responded politely by mail with more details, copies of the credit reports I'd gotten from each agency, a photocopy of my Cdn SIN # , a utility bill with my address and information regarding why nothing was found on a couple of the credit reports. I got a nice thin letter from them this week, stating that they were sorry I was disappointed with the original decision, but it still stood - based on the lack of information they got from the credit bureaus (none for me of course since I've only been here 1.5 yrs).

Bank - couldn't do anything either...basically got the line about 'these are tight times, we can't extend credit to people who may be a poor risk....blah blah'

So I applied for Bank of America secured credit card - wasn't a sure thing, still needed to be approved...looks like they took out my automatic deposit this morning so it's a done deal! I should be recieving a card with MY OWN NAME on it soon. Yes, it's secured, but at least it's a start. This seems like the first good news I've had in a while.

Anyway - Happy Thursday

cool, pick me up, and lets go for coffee, your treat, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

hmm i think i just found a link to this...is it the secured visa card?

According to Bank of america it's for those who want to build or rebuild their credit.

Sounds like a viable option for me.

Congrats, that's great news!

I found that Capital-One has a pretty easy-to-obtain credit card. The starting limit is low, and the interest is high, but as long as you pay it off each month you're golden.

That is the one - the yearly fee wasn't quite as BAD as some of the others. And it's a REAL bank - I was hesitant about some others

Hey congrats!!!!

Anything is a start!!!!

I found out this week that I got approved for my Amex here in Canada....I heard I can trans to my SSN when I get there.

Also, the day after I cross over I plan on applying at Target...I figure I could still use my Canadian credit info etc... Technically it's the same day I woke up in Canada...LOL! Hope it works! They messed it up last time...with half Can info and my fiancés US address :(

Capital One sent me a credit card application in the mail, they must have gotten my name from a mailing list or something? As they are not my bank. Anyway, I applied on line and even listed myself as a homemaker since I have no job yet, and I was approved!! Not sure the limit yet, it's probably small like $500. I should get that info in the mail with my new card in a few weeks! So it's a good start for me, to start slowly building credit in my own name! I'll use it a few times per month and pay it off.

Congratulations! Happy shopping. I'll try what you did.

Thanks! I had such excellent credit in Canada, it's disheartening to start from scratch :(

Hey congrats!!

Glad something worked out for you :)

Soon enough you'll be able to gain more credit and have a happy little credit report and score :D

Also, congrats to JillA :)

I too had good credit in Canada and hated having to start from scratch. I'm coming up on my 2 year credit mark, which is like golden down here.

Don't need any more credit however...have enough. Next thing is a mortgage :P
