I think there's been some great showmen (Steve Tyler, David Lee Roth, Bon Scott etc) but if I'm going for the best vocalist? Mmmmmmm, tough one. Really tough one. I think I'd just give it Rob Halford. Probably.

So many to choose from. I think most of the ones mentioned here are great choices. But I find that when this debate comes up, the one that usually gets left off the list is Freddie Mercury. I understand that some might be put off by his "life style" but when it comes to his vocals and stage presence, he's fighting for the top spot, in my opinion.

In which case, add David Bowie, Elton John and even Liberace for "honorable mention in the alternative lifestyle and outrageous stage presence" category

Momma Cass and Janis Joplin. Don't forget the ladies!!

Yup. Also add in Chrissie Hynde, Pat Benatar and Debbie Harry. The "Ladies who like to rock!" category

I definitely have to agree with you Easy Rider...Freddie Mercury had awesome vocals and was very creative. He did stuff that people didn't think would work & had great success...so my vote would be Freddie.
