I would consider any country that treats woman as second class citizens as 'backwards'.

How do we decide which direction is backward and which direction is forward?

Maybe treating women like chattle and not giving them any rights is actually good for the long-term health of a society and we in the West are going backwards to a dark time when women had rights.

Maybe taking their rights away is actually the way forward and we deluded Westerners don't realize it.

Hmmm, hadn't pegged you as a relativist.....

However you look it, there's no way anyone coming from the US or other developed country somewhere relatively stable country, would consider a country where it is legal (for example) to stone a woman to death as anything less than backward.

How about looking at:-

Putting someone to death by electric chair, gas or lethal injection.

Having citizens that cannot afford healthcare or dental treatment.

Child Sex Trafficking.

People sleeping on the streets unable to get work or afford homes.

These all apply to the US. It's all a matter of perspective.

How about a country with crappy weather and horrible food. ie... the UK. Would that be backwards?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I'm not. I'm not suggesting that something can be both backward and forward depending on where you stand. I'm suggesting that there is a backward and there is a forward but we may not realize which is which.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

As I said, these judgments are ultimately subjective (based on the views of the individual as a result of their social background and upbringing).

Simple example - someone who is brought up good table manners would likely find it rude and 'backward' if someone were to pick their nose at the table, burp or eat with their hands.

How about a country with crappy weather and horrible food. ie... the UK. Would that be backwards?

Socially?

For my money the specific area I live in NJ right now, is the worst place I've ever had the misfortune to live. I find the people badly educated, rude and downright unpleasant. Any place where a person can throw trash out of a moving car when they get off the freeway and not get a ticket is a stinker IMO.

When our lease is up we're moving further west - lot of nice towns further inland.

No, sorry this is not true. I was brought up to use a knife and fork, but have friends whose cultures find it acceptable to use their hands. My ex-husband's country considered it polite to burp after dinner. However, I can't see any country thinking it's nice to pick your nose at the table! lol

I was taught to consider cultural differences before judging anyone. I would certainly not consider people backward, or from a backward country, for showing these differences.

I guess this depends on your definition of "crappy" and "horrible". Personally, I find weather in the 100's and extremely humid, far less desirable than mild, sunny, hot, weather - which I have experienced in South West England.

I would also consider a diet high in fat, high in sugar, high in artificial ingredients, grown in inhumane conditions, etc. far more "horrible" than the diet many people in the UK eat.

Again, all a matter of perspective!

I agree. Try Pennsylvania.
