Backward Country...hmmmmmm

I just read a post where this statement was put, No I am not going to take you to the statement you will just have to look around, but for someone who is suppose to have at least some intelligence it is a very arrogant and rude. I tend to look at things on VJ and just recently things are turning ugly. There are quite a few things going on that I personally find disturbing. It was not like this when I first came to VJ but now it is all different. Anyhow back to the original statement, there are no backward countries, these countries are different in culture, one has to understand that culture. If this were the case I would consider the USA a backward country because there are plenty of rules and people that are different then the country that I come from. This is a cultural difference not a backward difference.

PS....You may be noticing more things recently, but believe me...VJ has had both great and wonderful and all sort of bad comments/people making trouble(not saying this is the case here as I didn't read the comment) as well for the duration...at least since I've been around. Have a good day... M.

Good post...

Just one minor disagreement...ever since I've been on VJ people have said VJ is getting ugly, it's changing and they don't like it anymore, etc. That has never, nor will ever change. As people come and go, the environment changes and goes through cycles. I don't think VJ is on a downward spiral.

I've read that every so often too Frances...It does seem to be the way of people to think 'it was ok when I got here, but now...' type of thing.(nothing personal against you Janice) It seems to be the same as any other message board really...the good, the bad and the ugly(meaning POSTS peeps!!haha)...VJ has always had it all! You will find all sorts of similar comments on various message boards. The problem, as I see it, is that people are "ignorant" of other countries' cultures and some think that material wealth is the only wealth that matters. You have to realise, Janice, that some people just don't have any kind of knowledge on which to base statements like "that is a backward country". Unfortunately though, they feel they do and that's the sad part.

What you're describing is political correctness. I would argue strongly that culturally a country can cartainly be backward and primitive. That determination is made subjectively of course, based on a comparison with our own culture (which is ultimately is your primary reference point for viewing other countries and cultures).

However you look it, there's no way anyone coming from the US or other developed country somewhere relatively stable country, would consider a country where it is legal (for example) to stone a woman to death as anything less than backward.

How about looking at:-

Putting someone to death by electric chair, gas or lethal injection.

Having citizens that cannot afford healthcare or dental treatment.

Child Sex Trafficking.

People sleeping on the streets unable to get work or afford homes.

These all apply to the US. It's all a matter of perspective.
