Canadian travel with AP, What to say when re-entering US?

I am traveling outside of the country and plan on using my AP to re-enter the US.

My question is, what do I say when asked the question "Why are you entering in the US?" at POE.

For example, on a H1B, you can't answer "I live in the US", you can only say "I am temporarily staying in the US for a job".

So, do I say, "I am visiting my husband?", "I am waiting for pending AOS filing?", "I am attending my GC interview?" or "I live in Seattle with my husband?". Would saying the last thing be bad?

I last entered the US as a tourist, before I became engaged and married. I am a Canadian and no stamp or I-94 was given in my passport. Is this a concern?

Thanks for your help!

You say "I'm Canadian" and hand them your passport and AP documents. They'll then ask how long you've been away, bringing anything thing back etc.

On work permits it's the same thing. I would just get to guard and hand over my passport and TN status and say "Canadian on a TN". They just wanted to know where I was visiting and for how long.

The odd time they would ask where I live and worked, but that's about it. It's pretty straight forward...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

I recently used my AP to return home from Canada as well, travelling by car. This is how it went:

Drove up to the border guard, handed him my passport with AP copies inside.

BG: Citizenship

ME: Canadian

BG: Where are you going & why

ME: Philadelphia, I live there

BG: How long were you away and what were you doing

ME: 2 weeks visiting family and friends

At this point he had looked at the AP and said "you have to be paroled in, please go inside" and he shot my passport with AP inside a tube to the office. Went into secondary, had to wait a while because it was busy then the BG inside processed my AP. Quite easy and simple!

Advanced Parole is issued to allow you to return to the US to complete your "in process" AoS after returning "home" for an emergency situation. If you carry a copy of your NOA1 and any other appointment letters (biometrics/interview) that support your current status then you shouldn't have a problem UNLESS you are out of status on your H1B or have an overstay issue.

You shouldn't really need to say anything, just present your documents and answer any questions addressed to you directly.

Thank you all for the quick replies! Very helpful.

I was just getting paranoid, because at one point when I was on an H1B and answer that question with "I'm returning home", the officer freaked out on me with my wording.

I don't have overstay issues and will be sure to carry all my NOAs, AP and EAD.

Thank you all!
