I think the point of waiting is to make sure your name is recorded in the database that you entered the country legally at POE. So since you're starting with a new legal status, I would think you wait on that record to be established. Often they have that info sooner than two weeks. You could also wait until you have a green card in hand and order the new card then, as well as change to your married name. If you still have the old card, I would think you could use that for opening a bank account, etc, as your number will remain the same as your previous one. PM Daymo and ask him what he did.

I had an SSN when I was in college, I have had confirmed the number will remain the same.

Do I still need to wait for 10 days after POE to get card re-issued?

When you arrive in the US people usually say to wait 10 days so that the paperwork you hand over at the POE, gets to the Service Centre. Then, when you go to the SS office, they'll see your name in the SAVE system, and know you arrived etc. If you've got a SS card right now, with a number on it, I'd suggest you still wait, however one thing you might want to consider is what name you're going to use after you get married. No sense in getting a SS card with your maiden name on it, if you're going to change it after marriage. Then you're going to have to go get a new card again. As well, your SS card when you arrive, even just to change your name will have a Not authorized to work on it, and again, after you get your EAD or GC, you're going to have to get another card with that part removed on it.

When I arrived, I got my card after 10 days, just so I could open a bank account, and get a library card. In MO, I couldn't get one with my married name on it, until I had my GC. (I didn't apply for EAD at that time). The same time I went in and showed them my GC, I got my new card in the mail about 7 days later, with the DHS work authorized statement off of it, with my married name on it.

I had a recent experience where I had a former student/post-doc with an SSN, who came back as a visitor and we needed to get him set up in Payroll as unpaid to be able to use our library. He was not able to get a replacement copy of his card, as he didn't have employment authorization, all that the Social Security Office would do is verify that he previously had a number. Luckily, his family was able to express mail his old card to us.

If the OP is coming on a K-1, since that status "has employment authorization" (you guys all know what I mean!), I think they should be able to just go in and request a replacement card. Notwithstanding the difficulty some people have had and posted about in the past!

Good luck and let us know what happened.
