YES

USCIS no longer routinely requires submission of original documents or "certified copies." Instead, ordinary legible photocopies of such documents (including naturalization certificates and alien registration cards) will be acceptable for initial filing and approval of petitions and applications.

Yes - B&W copies are acceptable - we used color when we copied passports since it showed entry stamps better.

Did you have specific color items you were wondering about?

oh yeah, was referring to copies for passport stamps and boarding passes, train tickets etc

I only used colors for the passport stamps photocopies, everything else was black and white. Should be ok.

I read online (I do not remember my source) and also was told by Kinko's it is illegal to make color copies of passport's and birth certificates.

Who knows if anyone cares enough to fuss about it..

Kinko's employees don't have to deal with the U.S. government or the (shudder) consulates. Although I'm a peace-loving sort, I would likely become quite livid if anyone there tried to stop me from making color copies of whatever I wanted. Use the self-service machines, of course, and no one will be the wiser.

Incidentally, on my last visit, I waited for the color copier behind an Indian-American young man and his immigrant father, who were copying passports in preparation for applying for visitors' visas on behalf of family in India. We had a pleasant conversation, and they marveled at my knowledge (from VJ) of where the U.S. consulates were in India -- I named all of them.
