And I think the time will come when people will consider it much more seriously, is when the federal government can no longer deliver. That time will come when the dollar collapses. No matter what they do and how many promises they have and how many bailouts they have they cant do it if the money doesn't work. So then, the independence of the states will come back and it doesn't mean that you'll be un-American to even contemplate what might have to be done once the dollar crashes.

What happens when there is no US to defend as being 'American'. Surely the only way to defend the US is to retain an all inclusive Union - otherwise it's just a band of dissperate countries, for that is what happens when you dissolve a Federation. You only have to look to the ex USSR to see the model for the Disunited States of America. Secessionists are highly unpatriotic - or, as is more likely they are trying to run a little blackmail scam.

Worked for the former U.S.S.R., didn't it? Think of the country of Wyoming, that will suddenly find itself in control of an MX Missile system...

They could be patriots of their own states

They could also declare patriotic wars of expansion against their neighbours.

All this talk of secession soounds rather hysterical to me.

Why?

Because the rhetoric is so much more exaggerated than the state of things.

In all the reasons given so far, which strikes you as the most exaggerated?

They could but do they really fancy being part of a 'Belarus' or an 'Uzbekistan'? I mean, who's heard of those countries? Yet as part of the USSR, a mighty people.

I expect CA or New York will do ok, but everyone else would sink into obscurity. The platform as patriot of the greatest country in the world would be sunk without trace. Not that I would care, just seems a funny way to go about being patriotic.

Hyperbole rules! FTW!

I wouldn't be so skeptical if it weren't so obvious that this guff was devised, promoted and propagated by elements in the media.
