The general guideline on this forum and other posts have stated that a photo is not required to complete the on-line form. This is only partially correct. You cannot continue the form unless you up-load a test photo. We did not have a photo that would pass the specs, but attempted to up-load one anyway. It failed the test but we were then allowed to continue the form. Be prepared to have some kind of photo to up-load or you won't get beyond that page.

And don't forget that if your photo doesn't pass the test and you finish the app without a passable photo, I believe you are required to bring an extra passport photo. I'm not entirely sure if they ask for one, but maybe someone who recently did this can confirm.

That is correct. You are instructed to attach a passport photo to the confirmation page from the DS-160 when you submit your papers at the consulate.

Which forum were you intending to post this?

It is intended for the Canadian forum since I believe they are the only consulates using the DS-160 on-line form.
