NAME CHANGE: WHAT IS NEEDED?

I'm moving next month, and we plan to marry within 2-3 weeks. So I will apply for my SSN right after we marry, and I want to apply in my married name.

Question: once I file for AOS, what is required to file in my married name, just the marriage certificate?

and for SSN, what do they need, certificate also?

I see that you should wait about 2 weeks to get SSN, to ensure that you are in the system and avoid being processed manually?

I downloaded the forms and bulletins from this site.

Also, can I hyphenate my name? I want to keep my maiden name as well as my married name. Will they allow my to hyphenate on SSN and AOS/GC?

I prefer to do this, as my son carries my maiden name, and I would like to still have same/partial last name.

Thanks in advance :)

You will do better to get the SSN initially in your maiden name. Fill out the form exactly as your name appears on the I-94...probably with just the first and last name, as there is no place for middle name on the I-94. SS will search for your name in the S.A.V.E. database to confirm your status. It would have been entered from your POE name and record. People seem to have less trouble getting through the SS system that way. Often local SS offices are unfamiliar with the K1 person. Later when you have the green card, you can go back and get a new SS card with the restriction removed and do the name change at the same time. Your number will remain the same.

On the name change. When you get your marriage license, you can probably specify the name after marriage you wish to appear on the marriage document. That would be a good starting place to show your hyphenated name. Or you could use your maiden name as a middle name. Mary Ann Wilson could become Mary Wilson Jones (fairly commonly done) or she could be Mary Ann Wilson-Jones.

When you apply for AOS, fill in your forms with the married name you plan to use in the last name box. Your green card will be issued in that married name. If there is an area asking for other names or former names used, that's where you put the maiden name. Your marriage certificate sent with AOS shows the record of your name change.

I wonder how the hyphenated name works for married people. Like in an alphabetical list Mary Wilson-Jones would be in the "W"s while her husband would be in the "J"s. And if they have a baby, will they name it Baby Jones or Baby Wilson-Jones? Ahhh...so many choices.

Thanks for the reply! So would it be easier to apply in maiden name as this will be in their system from POE?

Also, once conditions are removed, do you have to go get a new SSN card to show they are lifted? Cause, you are right, if I have to go there anyways to do that, then I could always do the name change then

Thanks again! :)

Yes once you get your GC you go back to the SSN office to get a new card that doesn't state the restriction on it, I just went last week and already got my new SSN card.... As the previous poster stated, you could just change your name on the SSN card when you go back with your GC as that will have your married name on it.

Yes, easier to apply in the name as written on the I-94 card you got at POE. Every worker is different in their training and experience, so if you have problems, ask to speak to a supervisor. Also have you read the VJ guides on K1 getting a SSN?? It's a good explanation.

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...om&page=ssn Scroll down to the K1 instructions.

My husband got his new card in the mail today as well. Last week we went to the SS office to show the green card and request a new version of the SS card. He also requested his middle name be added to his SS record, since the first card was issued exactly like the I-94. The best she would do was add his middle initial because that's what the GC had written on it and she wouldn't budge on that point.

Thanks! I did print off the app and the memo's... I will do just that.... apply in my I-94 maiden name, and then when I get my GC, go back for the name change

Thanks
