For those who are close to interview dates, get your vaccine shots early. My fiance just recently took her exam and was told she needed to get two shot for $400.000 (pesos), luckily she did them already prior to leaving but just did not record it as of yet for $50.000 pesos, quite a difference! Save yourselfs some money instead of being rip off, there's enough things to try not to worry about.

This may be a country specific issue; I know here in Ireland, any vaccinations you need is included in the medical fee (317 euro last year)- I had to have a tetanus shot and it was done right there during the medical, with no extra fee

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.

Good point penguin. In Canada they are not included and the fees are much higher if you have them done by the Panel Physician, it is something to be aware of.

Really? We had the medical in Dublin on April 3 and had to go back two weeks later for the HPV shot and the Dr. told us that many families go there and spend 1000+ euros on vaccinations. But the tetanus shot is cheap compared to the 140 euros HPV shot. Also I believe that p3 said vaccinations are not part of the 317 euro fee, but I will need to find that and make sure.

Interesting! Maybe it depends on the doctor then? I specifically asked about extra costs for vacinations, as I thought I may need a couple of boosters for childhood vaccines and was afraid of the extra costs, and was told on the phone by the receptionist there would be no extra costs, which proved true. I went to the ParkAvenue clinic in Dublin.

Yes, definitely. My husband had to pay I think 60+ dinar (85$) for two injections from the panel physician. He was really sad and said he shouldn't have said he didn't know if he had them or not, they did no titers or anything to check if he really needed any or not.

But you know the list of what they require is super huge and I'm surprised they would just take someone's word for what they had or not, strange....

It might be, I tried to go to the ParkAvenue one but I couldn't get in until next month :( so I gave Dr. Kelly on Drumcondra Road a call and was able to get in the next day. How often are people able to move up their interview date? Mine is May 18th but I have all of my stuff ready to go, I tried to talk to the embassy but they have since gone to an all email system :( and they don't seem to like to respond to my emails. Just 20 days ago I could call them up and they would always answer my phone calls.

It is. But you have to go to a US certified doctor to get your medical exam done. In my province of 4 million people, only 1 doctor is qualified from a US point of view to perform those difficult tasks of checking your blood pressure. Rubbing their fingers behind your ears. And watching you walk across the room.

$275 for the exam. $15 for the tetanus shot.

What vaccines were needed ?

I have a good idea but you just did it. Did she get her shots in Bogota?

Thats where my girl is from .. I plan on her getting some before medical exam as well.

I'm not sure but I'll asked. She has her interview today...awaiting on the answer. She got het shot in Barranquilla. Based on your shot history, you can tell what you need, just make sure you get prior to the exam or you'll get ripped off.

Well - first of all it's not free it is universal - universal health care does not mean 'free' - it just means everyone is covered - we pay higher taxes for it, which I am happy to do. Secondly, people in some provinces also pay a nominal monthly fee - like 88 dollars a month in Alberta (although they did away with that fee this year).

However - extra things are not covered. Say for instance you want to get a measles shot because you need it for immigration - some (not all) doctors will not bill this to Provincial health care - you will pay for it out of pocket.

Universal Health Care is for people genuinely needing health care, it's not for immigration and it's not for things like a yearly work physical - you have to pay for those things out of your own pocket.

Here is a page with pretty good overall information on vaccinations required, also, if you are unsure of which vaccinations you have had, but think you have had some (but have no proof) you can always get an antibody titers test.
