I should note that people here in my city are robbed on a frequent basis, and I walk to work, so I can just picture myself getting robbed on the street and bursting into tears BEGGING the mugger to keep the silly wallet but NOT my green card.. I'd be the one to try to plead with him.. take my body, but give me back the greencard!!! okay maybe not that.. but ya know

Yeah, I always carry mine with me also. Do you know what's weird, though? They tell you not to carry the SSN card but you're constantly being asked for the number, and they tell you to always carry the GC and yet you're never asked to produce it. They've got it all backwards. Now here's my problem.... the SSN says do not carry it with you so I didn't.... and now I don't know where it is. icon2.gif

Oh I know! I went to the bank teller to withdraw $$ and I didn't know my account # offhand, so I produced my bank card. She said sorry, I need your account # or SSN #. I didn't have either, and she scowled "You don't know your SSN#?" I felt so dumb I never memorized it, so now I wrote it on a little paper to put in my wallet but don't keep the actual card on me. At Royal Bank when I go to the teller, I just give them my bank card that's all.

Stupid American banks, wish they'd get into the 90's at least :) - my Wachovia account # is soo freaking long I will never memorize it (USC hubster hasn't either) - my old TD account was 6 digits and I'd had it since I was 12.

I memorized my SSN, but it doesn't come 2nd nature like my Cdn SIN does - we have a slight diadvantage since we haven't been dealing with these numebrs for too long!

been here since Dec 2004, and still don't have my SSN memorized, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

People get ticked all the time that I don't know my SSN. I mean, get a grip, people! How much ####### do you think I can fit into this brain? I lived thru the 70's, dammit! I'm lucky to have a brain left! :bonk:

 I just think it's odd that you need it for absolutely everything here! I applied for a few jobs and the application asked for SSN # I think so they could do a background check..... But it's not like they hired me and needed it, they wanted it beforehand....

What? I can't remember numbers in sequential order... it doesn't matter if there's 4 or 12. I didn't know you're not suposed to carry your SIN card with you, I always do. In fact I always carry EVERYTHING in my giant wallet... everything from my SIN, birth certificate, passport and immunization card.. Bad idea? Possibly...

I dont carry the actual card--its locked up in our safety deposit box. I just write it down on a card.

I don't know about the SIN. I never carried it on me because, frankly, you just don't need it. It's the SSN they tell you not to carry on you. Which is stupid because you're asked for the number ALL THE TIME!!!

It bothers me to have to carry the green card but I do. I have photocopies at home and in our safety deposit box, though. I also don't know my SSN, but one of the advantages of having a military ID card (Joe is retired army) is that it has both my and his SSN on it. That is my most useful card because yes, you get asked for your SSN all the time!

When I was waiting for my I-751 to be removed though, I didn't carry my passport with the I-551 stamp with me. I never received an NOA, so I carried a photocopy of the passport page with the I-551 and my expired green card. Hehehe, I felt guilty doing so, worried about if I ever got stopped but I have never had to show my immigration status except for my DL.

When flying, I just use my DL - leave the passport at home unless I am travelling to Canada.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

You know what I wonder - say you do get stopped and asked to show your immigration status. Well say you're American and my husband doesn't carry around his passport or birth certificate, all he has is a DL. That's what I have too is a DL, so my point is how do you "prove" you're American anyhow!

WOW really! I think the general consensus on here is to carry your GC at all times.... The last thing I need is for ICE to catch me without my GC (not sure how often ICE checks around suburban Philly but anyhow) and send me into detention :crying:
