Domestic (USA) Travel with 2 Yr GC

Hi guys!

Quick question for the seasoned folks.

My Canadian passport is in my maiden name. My 2 year GC is in my married name (just added on husband's surname to mine). When I travel within the USA, what do I need? My ticket is booked under my married name: Mrs So and So. I can't remember for the life of me remember what IDs I need to bring when traveling within the USA. I haven't flown within the USA since getting my 2 yr GC, but before that, I traveled everywhere with my Canadian passport all the time.

I can just show my GC, right? It's got my married name and that name matches my ticket. I can technically leave my Canadian passport at home, right? Now that I'm in the USA and have a GC I don't need to travel domestically with a passport, right?

I just show my DL.. I take my GC with me when I travel out of state as well. but they only ask to see a DL when I fly within the US.

Yeah, you should be fine. I was only visiting at the time, but I flew from Las Vegas after a few days to Texas, then Oklahoma, I never had to show my passport. I used Provincial ID...lmao.

Like the website says, you basically just need a valid form of photo ID. After the wedding I plan on booking my flights in my maiden name, just so I can use my passport as ID. I won't have state issued ID until after I get my EAD, since Colorado's bureaucrats are wanna be immigration police :P

Remember in future though that if you fly anywhere internationally you will have to use your passport as ID, and the name on your ticket must match the name on your passport, so use your maiden name when you buy your ticket. Otherwise they can't let you on the plane.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

Danette has flown internationally with her married name on the ticket and her maiden name on her passport. She keeps a photocopy of our marriage certificate with her just in case. But, she has never been asked for it. If they need any extra clarification, she just shows them her GC. These have been trips to Canada and the Carribean. I don't know about going to someplace like Europe.

She got lucky. I've travelled with someone who was refused boarding because of the name discrepancy. They had to go to the ticket counter with all their evidence and have the ticket reissued in the passport name.

On the issue of travelling documentation, when I got my 2 year GC it states you "MUST" carry it with you at all times. Do any of you actually carry it with you always, or only when travelling abroad? I am paranoid to keep it on me, I don't want to lose it / wallet stolen then I'm screwed. What do you guys do?

Yes - originally I asked the very same question - I mean who could distinguish me from anyone else around here - the police are hardly going to pick me out as an immigrant.

But it is the law. Better to have it then not - I check probably once every other day that I have it in my wallet, I'm that paranoid! It is my most treasured possession at this point. technically they could through you into holding while you waita nd they investigate your immigration status and who wants that - easier to just carry it with confidence

ha ha.. yeah.. I'll get hounded about breaking the law etc.. but I don't.. I keep a color photocopy in my wallet that has the word "copy" written on it. I carry the actual card everywhere I am when I'm out of the state, but when i'm here doing day to day stuff.. not a chance.. it's at home safe and sound.

Yeah, I always carry mine with me also. Do you know what's weird, though? They tell you not to carry the SSN card but you're constantly being asked for the number, and they tell you to always carry the GC and yet you're never asked to produce it. They've got it all backwards. Now here's my problem.... the SSN says do not carry it with you so I didn't.... and now I don't know where it is. icon2.gif
