It costs way too much.. but I can break it down well what I remember at least...

While I totally agree the cost is out of control, its not just the US, so don't feel too bad.

Immigration seems to be a good money maker.

Just for FYI, I though I would post this....I acquired PR (permanent residency) in New Zealand several years ago. I paid a similar cost in NZ dollars for the residency (something like NZ$500 for the initial application, NZ$1000 for the residency permit, plus NZ$150 for the medical (which has since gone up to NZ$300-400), about NZ$150 for the visa to be re-issued after the initial two years, plus document fees and police record fees and other stuff I am probably forgetting.

I imagine other commonwealth countries are similarly priced.

First off I know we were very lucky with a quick and easy K-1 process..

And really the costs are not straight forward but there are things that could be given up (gifts..) so you can be together a little sooner. and with Skype the communication doesn't have to be given up.

and then there's musts in the K-1 that have to be covered.

Nothing comes free. Not even love.

I understand what everyone is saying about having savings when you do get married.. and yes it would be nice to have savings but we started out with nothing at all. and working up. We spent all of our savings on visits and enjoying time together. Things were rough when he first got here but we're just happy to be together that money isn't a problem. We have each other and we're both happy with that.

"if you have to ask, you can't afford it..."

(sorry - had to say it :) )

Don't forget to include costs of mailing, visits, gifts, phone calls, etc...

it all adds up.

Thats not true...the op was just wondering the cost, doesnt mean they cant afford it. a bit judgmental.

see the :) = joke.

If you do Skype, then phone calls are reasonably free. Also, I don't see how gifts figure into the 129-f petition.

If you don't sweeten the pot for your benificiary, they may not want to marry you :)

a :) doesnt make it a joke.

Also, I don't see how gifts figure into the 129-f petition.

Depends on which country you're dealing with. In some, gifts may be a necessary part of the process.

I'm kidding (mostly)!

If the difference btwn affording the KI is the price of a few gifts and phone calls, then the petitioner is NOT ready. Itz not responsible to be brokety broke and think it will be fun to start out a new life together, much less a baby that way. Be patient and petition her when you have some resources to draw on. Dont just barely afford to go see her, then petition her. How can you be a good provider that way? SOmetimes we need to wait and prepare a little longer in order to set the stage for success. Good luck! :D

We are just beginning this process, filing the I-129f in June..

wondering how much roughly we should save up for everything start to finish...

How much is the K1 part? Im assuming my Uk fiance will have to pay this in London?

I am the main financial provider, so I need to know approx. how much to set aside for him..

thanks all!!

Government fees are layed out well here. http://www.fianceandspousevisa.com/FEES.html

it costs you also a lot of time of research, moment of stress, and also agony, but you can win to become an expert in the phone lo*ve ma*king...oops...

*lips sealed* :o:blush:

I appreciate all of these responses...

to clarify...

I (female) am the USC petitioning for my UK fiance (male)..

We have my parents to sponsor us, as we are both just finishing college..

but we cannot do this back and forth relationship any longer- and would rather be broke and together, then be apart.

we both work and what not- but so much of our money has gone into plane tickets and what not just to be together... so now we work to get money for this K1 process and then we are together to work and save..

no babies for us for a while!!! LOL

laureldevine, best of luck, it will be ok.

If it makes you feel better about being just out of university and broke...know that my fiance and I are mid-30's, both with professional careers and since we started the K-1 process (and have subsequently been forced into a long distance relationship about a year ago), we have not saved ANY money. It all goes to plane tickets, visits, processing fees, or mailing stuff. We would have a nice down-payment on a house had it not been for this, but oh well...

It's great your parents support you but be aware one parent will be the co-sponsor, not both.

That's where we were when my husband came over here. Don't let others worry you with their talk of having some nest egg built up. No recent college grad has that and you are never going to build it up spending all your extra cash on flights back and forth. We just built up enough to support ourselves until my husband got his work permit. He has lots of useful skills and easily found a good job right after getting his work permit. Just remember you need to keep saving since there are lots of costs that keep popping up. Mainly remember to save the 1010$ for AOS
