Hello Everyone,

I have a 5-year multi entry visa and I entered Ukraine last year on April 3rd 2008, I lived with my fiance during this time, but I over stayed and didn't leave until November 28th, and I had to pay customs about 800 hryvnas. Anyways, I am a bit confused about the 6 months out of a year maximum stay rules. When can I go back to Ukraine - does it start counting from when I last entered Ukraine, or when I last left? It is past April 3rd, so can I go back now? Please help, I am planning my trip and I don't want to spend all this money and then be refused entry when I get there. Thanks.

I guess my first question is "why do you have a visa?" It is not required for Ukraine. OK. It is 2009. Your overstay for the year was in 2008. If it is 6 months in a calendar year, you could have gone back anytime after January 1, 2009. If it is 6 months from any "12 month period" you cannot go back until April 3rd PLUS the number of days of overstay. Depends how the visa is written.

Ukraine eliminated the need for USC's to have visas in 2005. Was yours issued before this? Or did you get it because you planned on staying longer than the usual 90 day limit? (maybe obviously)

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. Well, there is no 90 day limit, it was doubled to 180 day limit last year, that's why I said 6 months. And yes, I got a long 5-year multi-entry visa because I thought it meant I could stay for 5 years, but I assumed wrong and of course that was not the case. Well, at least I can enter multiple times, but I don't know what the entry/exit requirements are with this visa. I mean seriously, what's the point of having a 5 year visa if we have to leave the country every 6 months anyways, and USC's don't need a Visa when staying up to 6 months??? According to travel.state.gov, it says this:

"American citizens traveling to or staying in Ukraine are reminded of the recent changes to Ukrainian Immigration Law. Mandatory registration for short-term visits of up to 180 days is completed at the border by border control offices and is valid for a period of 180 days in one year. In other words, a traveler may come to Ukraine as a tourist for a cumulative period of 180 days within a consecutive period of 360 days without a visa. The calculation of the 180-day period begins from the date of the first entry into Ukraine. This regulation applies to all American citizens irrespective of the date of their entry into Ukraine."

But, it doesn't mention anything about what happens when a person overstays that time period like I did. I am hoping that since I paid money for the fine that I will be able to re-enter Ukraine within the normal time frame. I hope so, because we miss each other very dearly, it's driving us crazy. Also, I notice this statement talks about mandatory registration? What's that all about? I have been to Ukraine 5 times already and I never registered and never had any problems about it.
