What's the Cheapest Way to Move Cross Country?

Hi all,

Say if one were going to move about a small one-bedroom apartment's worth of stuff from New York to Louisiana, what would be the best way to do it? Just rent a Budget truck and drive for a few days?

In this case, the actual value of the stuff being moved is considerable, and worth moving (as opposed to just junking it, and buying all new stuff once in LA).

Any thoughts? Experiences?

Cheapest way to move accross country is the same way it has been for the last 30 years....Highways and hitchhiking WOW... what an adventure.... now, coming back to reality, I believe you answered your own question, if the stuff is worth it, then rent a Budget or a small U-Haul..that's my thought and experience.

Rent a truck and sleep in your car. Getting a hotel is safer though.

Wish i could do it via hitchhiking or bicycle. That would be a great adventure!

Renting a truck I agree with; but due to the distance and configurations*** involved, a U-haul actually works better than a Budget/Penske.

***Penske/Budget generally has non-reclining van-type bucket seats while U-haul generally has an across-bench (usable for sleeping, though not quite like a cot)--from my experience moving Dallas-Atlanta with Penske and Atlanta-DC with U-haul.
