I have a question based on this... my son's father is a Canadian citizen and I am a US citizen... so he is automatically both right? I am not quite sure what I need to do to declare his Canadian citizenship... but if he never lives in Canada and has children, does this mean that they will be part Canadian also... or is the dual citizenship only until they are 18 and they have to declare a citizenship? Do you know? We want to get the papers done so he can have both a Canadian passport and he already has and uses his American one. Because we don't have the official papers done for his Canadian citizenship, when I have flown with him to Canada twice, I said he was an American citizen.

We'd need a little bit more information to give you a precise answer.

Your son (who is a real cutie!! Congratulations!!) is most probably both.

Where was he born? In the US, Canada, or other?

I'm assuming he was born in the US.

If so, he is certainly 100% US citizen. If he was born outside of the US, it will depend upon your past US residence history.

Now regarding Canadian citizenship, where was your husband born? In Canada? If so, again your son should have Canadian citizenship from birth, and should be able to retain it for life. I believe that you will need to register him with the nearest Canadian consulate to where you live to establish this. If your husband was not born in Canada, then most likely the age-28 (not 18) rule will apply to your son. See my post above, and in particular follow the link I provided to the CIC document explaining this.

Awesome, thank you. Yes, I am a US citizen born in the United States and yes, my husband is a Canadian citizen born in Quebec, Canada. My son will be 8 months old tomorrow and was born here in Colorado. I checked out the link and this is exactly what I needed!!! Thanks! :)

We've (I've) been waiting for this legislation to pass since I came across it last year.

My dear husband, who makes fun of my "eh"s and Canadian accent (whatever THAT means) is going to be made a Canadian citizen. He's actually pretty excited about getting another passport. He travels a whole ton and having a Canadian passport will make it easier to go to some countries.

His mother is Canadian but moved to the USA, married, had kids in the 60s. She never got Canadian citizenship for her kids. She eventually got her US citizenship and lived happily ever after, so she has dual.

This legislation grants my husband citizenship through his mom, which is fantastic. I will be getting my US citizenship when I'm eligible. Our kid will have dual as well. So this is like a bonus without us asking.

Why are Canadian commercials always so bad and low budget? They have always sucked and now over a decade later I see that they haven't improved. Ugh how embarassing...

I think it's just the Government commercials. I don't think they've changed their writers/producers/acting style since TV was made. All the regular commercials are "normal".

Why is it embarassing? Commericals force the masses to spend money so who cares if they are bad or not?

Not to mention, Canadian television doesn't have the billions of dollars that the US has to spend money on tv production. Go to the UK, and you will find the same thing.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

All the regular commercials are "normal".

Remember, most of the "commercials" we get on Canadian tv are American commercials so they appear normal because, of course, they were produced in the US.

Have to disagree with you there. Canadians see American commercials because we get a lot of American channels in Canada, but the Canada-based companies of American corporations produce a Canadian version for the Canadian market and an American version for the American market.

True.

But there are probably many US companies that advertise on Canadain tv that do not necessarily have Canadian-based locations.

(I actually can't say how true my statement is because I don't have any facts to back it up...:lol)

Just saying.

OK have any of you seen this Cheerios commercial where a husband and wife are sitting at the breakfast table and on the CANADIAN channels the original commercial is them speaking in a British accent. On the AMERICAN channels they dubbed the voices in a regular American accent. I found that SO wierd, the Americans didn't want the British accent on their commercials. It was so funny to see both of them.

THAT commercial bothers me so much! And I didn't know why until now! The words don't 100% match up when they open up their mouths!
