China, Friend or Foe?

The Pentagon views the rapidly expanding Chinese military as the U.S.'s top potential rival. Andrew Browne and Gordon Fairclough on the reality of the 'China threat.'

A cave complex blasted out of the rocky coastline on China's southern island province of Hainan is home to one of the newest and potentially most lethal weapons in Beijing's arsenal: a home-grown submarine designed to launch nuclear-armed ballistic missiles.

So when the USNS Impeccable, a U.S. surveillance ship, was snooping in the area last month, China set a trap. Five Chinese vessels crowded around the U.S. ship. Crew members hurled chunks of wood into the Impeccable's path and used poles to try to snare its acoustic equipment. When U.S. sailors turned a fire hose on their assailants, the sodden Chinese crew aboard one of the vessels stripped to their underwear and closed to within 25 feet, the Pentagon said.

The encounter in the South China Sea, which lasted for about 3½ hours, was intended to send a clear message. China says the Impeccable was violating international law by conducting surveillance activities in its exclusive economic zone. The U.S. and many other nations view such activity as legal.

When U.S. surveillance ships visit the area in the future, says Su Hao, director of the Center for Strategic and Conflict Management at China Foreign Affairs University, "they'll be more cautious."

The Pentagon views China as the country most likely, at some point down the road, to acquire the capacity to challenge the U.S. military on a global scale. The U.S. in recent years has moved to strengthen its forces in the Pacific and urged its ally Japan to do the same. Washington and Tokyo are working together to boost anti-missile defenses, to defend against threats from both North Korea and China. And some in the Defense Department talk up the "China threat" to justify greater spending on new weapons systems.

China have not wage any type of war against the US. They don't want war. As a matter of fact, hundreds of years passed and China have not even attempted to take over IndoChina area (this includes Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam). And, I never heard of China trying to even take over Japan in the past. I heard vice-versa where Japan wants China. During the Vietnam War and after, China just made friends. They didn't take over Vietnam.

So what if China is becoming a major global asset to the economy, what hazards or ill-intention do they have?

I am really screwed up on this subject.

"The U.S. in recent years has moved to strengthen its forces in the Pacific and urged its ally Japan to do the same. Washington and Tokyo are working together to boost anti-missile defenses, to defend against threats from both North Korea and China."

Thought China war our ally and letting us build bases against Japan.

Must be the shortage of women in China causing their aggressiveness, maybe they just want to come here to rape our women. They can have my ex wife.

Come to think of it, when did China ever wage war against the US in the past history. China have let Roosevelt stepped all over them, didn't retaliate. China let the US build bases on their grounds against Japan in WW2. Although in the cold war, China did have some influence, but they didn't did anything damaging. In fact in the cold war, it was the Soviets who were a threat. China does have human rights issue, but, how does that affect the US? It's just weird.

On the other hand, I see the US refusing China to step all over them. Refusing China to set military bases on US soil, etc...

I concur. I do not consider China a foe. They have no reason to expand their borders. The Chinese people have already populated most inhabited areas!

I didn't fall asleep in History class. Back in those times, the US wanted to become the international police. Roosevelt (US) had his speak softly but carry a big stick idealogy. He had open up free trade with China, and controlled China. Which western civilization can trade with China, etc..

Go back to sleep. Trade was open to Americans as result of the UK's Opium War. "1844: The United States gains the same trading rights as the United Kingdom under Treaty of Wanghia."

It probably was but when you compound the problem by making another inaccurate statement despite protestations of being awake in history class, you can expect some mild ridicule. Better yet if you haven't been to China you should do so. Too many Americans know little about China and we aren't getting any smarter despite a massive increase in trade and competition for worldwide resources.
