Did you receive car import documents at POE: Yes, form 7501 (says my car is duty free)

Was your car inspected: Annual inspection needs to be done before registration. (You need the receipt)

What documents did you require: A whole bunch. They have them at the tax accessor's office

Any additional costs: $90 new Texan fee, a few small charges...total bill was $177

Most people in Harris county buy 1 year registration stickers. You also have the option of getting 2 or 3 year stickers. Handy as it saves time. And you know the fees are only going to go up in the future.

I tried going to my local courthouse to get my registration stuff done. But they ALWAYS had long lineups (1-2 hours). Going to the main tax accessor at the downtown courthouse, the line is maybe 5 minutes. Worth the drive in my opinion. You probably won't be able to do it all in one visit though. Part of the paperwork they give you is needing to get a Houston police check of your car's VIN number. And they only do that once a week from 9AM to 9:30AM if memory serves me correct.

Steps in Texas

1) Get a vehicle inspection.

2) Buy US car insurance (you can do this before the inspection if you want)

3) Register the car

4) Get a US driver's license (they want your car to be registered before they'll give you a license)

I waited for my green card to come in before getting a Texas license. That way you get the full 6 year license that doesn't say temporary visitor.

You MUST do this before inspection, because the inspector will want to see proof of insurance.
