Thx. That fact I'll see him in 32 days is the only thing that makes me happy right now.

I get to see my maya 2 days after you see yours - leaving literally the night of the last day of classes.

This time in 5 weeks I'll be most likely up listening to the frogs croaking and the birds chirping(jetlagged) after spending the first night with my husband in over 10 months...

Oh hell, who needs sleep anyway?????

How about a poll on the age gap between spouses? :innocent:

My heart has adopted every shape.

It has become a pasture for gazelles,

And a convent for Christian monks,

And a temple for idols,

And a pilgrim's Ka'ba,

The tables of a Torah,

And the pages of a Qu'ran.

I follow the religion of love.

Wherever love's camels turn,

There love is my religion and my faith.

Ibn al'Arabi, "Tarjuman al-Ashwak" (13th century)

I'm 18 and he's 22...we are 5 years apart but age in our relationship doesn't seem to be a problem...the only advantage in our situation is he is able to take care of me as he just graduated and will be looking for his first permanent job and I'll be going to university! He's always been the one to deal with all the finances and stuff like that...it's nice in Islam how the women don't have to do anything!

Not a bad idea at all.

...

Its interesting to see how many ladies say their SO acts so young ... do you think its a cultural thing, or a gender thing ?

The short answer..... Yes....

Can't speak for non-Egyptian MENA men..... but Egyptian men are often spoiled and coddled like they are Kings of the Universe by their Mothers... And if they marry a doting, adoring, self-reliant Western woman they get to keep acting that way... And I'm sure they enjoy prolonging this...

If they married an Egyptian woman (who is traditionally 7 years or so younger than her husband) they would be expected to step up to the responsibility plate BIG TIME... as she would shortly start producing SCORES of offspring for him to support... and she would NEVER spoil him (once the honeymoon was over) unless she wanted something... or later on (much later) in life when she began to fear he might take a 2nd wife... and actually she would be more likely to have another child than start spoiling him... My Egyptian sister-in-law (from my previous marriage to an Egyptian) told me that American women just don't know how to handle Egyptian men.. that the more American women spoil them, the lazier and more selfish the men become... Don't expect your husbands to agree with this POV... But in my book, who knows Egyptian men better than Egyptian women... especially their sisters....

Marrying a woman who is willing and able to support herself (and him!) allows the Egyptian man to delay his maturity MUCH longer than if he married someone from his own culture who had HIGH demands on HIM... And of course his family and hers would also be watching him and holding his feet to the fire (to a MUCH greater extent than if he married a Western woman) to GROW UP and manage his household... Egyptian women won't marry a man who hasn't proven he can support a family in MOST cases... So what better way to avoid growing up than to marry someone who thinks you're a cute "Peter Pan"?

Just look at the difference of expectations of the Egyptian groom between the American bride and the Egyptian bride... The Egyptian bride expects him to provide a sizeable dowry, a home (paid for) and furnishings, a car, etc. , and have an income that will support her and the children.. (maybe less so these days)... while on VJ I read about women buying airline tickets for their husbands to come here to live in the woman's house, and drive her car, and eat from her income...

I'm so thankful my husband is ALL grown up and has already had 25 years of experience providing for his ex-wife, their 3 kids, his mother and an unmarried sister.... I adore every gray hair on his head... as PROOF that I don't have to "raise him"... :D He spoils me rotten...
