Assuming the animal is not cornered or with cubs, I thought you were supposed to run at it yelling and making big arm gestures.

i'm a city boy. i'm pissing my pants, running, & yelling the opposite direction.

I'm not sure if the same advice holds true for different animals - if you see a bear you're supposed to yell at it and make a lot of big gestures.

Whether someone has the balls to do that in the situation...

i have no balls when it comes to wild animals. if its bigger than a squirrel i'm gone.

About 25 years ago my dad saw a neighbor run like ###### from a badger that he'd discovered in his shed - went belting down the garden with his bathrobe open and his slippers flying off.

Oh yes, my dad goes bike riding on trails where mountain lion attacks have occurred. (remember the news story of the lady who got attacked by one n her friend held on to her n wouldnt let the lion take her). Yeah he goes there to bike ride, he's mr. tough guy. He was going to buy some bear pepper spray but figured mt lions are sneaky, quiet, and pounce from behind so wouldnt be much use having pepper spray. I worry abut him!

I think the West Coast has a lot of mountain lions. British Columbia has a number of them in the more rural areas. It's happened before, but it's exceedingly rare to see one. I think a mountain lion once wandered into Victoria. I wasn't there to see it, however.

Mountain lion attacks: Stand or run? Evidence suggests run

A new UC Davis study of 110 years of mountain-lion attacks on people suggests the conventional wisdom of standing your ground may not always be the right course.

"Even though we found evidence that pumas will indeed chase, and capture, people who run, we also found that people who stand still are possibly more endangered," said the study's lead author, psychology professor Richard Coss, an expert on the evolution of predator-prey relationships.

"Immobility may be interpreted by the mountain lion as a sign that you are vulnerable prey, either because you are unaware of its presence, or because you are disabled and not capable of escaping."

Thus, running might be the smartest move, Coss concluded, if you are in a situation that allows you to run in a surefooted fashion with even strides -- for instance, on dry, flat ground rather than uneven, rocky terrain or deep snow.

Most state and federal wildlife agencies advise against running, including the California Department of Fish and Game.

Or just don't go jogging in Cali. I'll go with that.

Only wild animals around me are geese and deer.

google "deer attacks"

a small sample.......

• Ron Dudek, 73, of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., died Oct. 17 of complications from antler wounds inflicted to his face by a male deer that Dudek encountered when he went to pick tomatoes in his backyard garden. It was the nation's second deer-assault death in two years: Donald Sellers, 79, was fatally gored and mauled by his pet buck in Gilbertown, Ala., in 2003.

• Karen Morris, 56, of Clearlake, Calif., was hospitalized for 12 days with head injuries in an attack by a young buck Nov. 17 outside her home. The horns bruised Clifford Morris, 68, when he came to his wife's aid.

• In Covelo, Calif., on Sept. 29, Arnold and Jeannine Bloom returned to their pickup after watering a friend's vegetable garden. A small buck ran up to the truck and knocked the man on his back, California Department of Fish and Game warden Rusty Boccaleoni says. When Jeannine Bloom swung at the animal with a piece of firewood, it turned upon her and ripped a hole in her arm. The next day, Boccaleoni shot and killed the animal.

• Game wardens shot five bucks on the streets of Helena, Mont., after the deer threatened staffers at a day care center and a teenager delivering newspapers.

You know what else is scary? Possums. Those bastards are SCARY. They ate one of our cats. And they used to hang out by the cat dish outside and wait for food to be poured in the bowls.
