I am wondering what other fellow Canadians have done when they move down to the US ...

I called BC Medical to let them know when I will be leaving the country (I get the impression that I couldn't keep this insurance past the date I leave Canada) ... My fiancee has a good medical plan but it appears that it could be a couple weeks before we get married ... Which means I could be without any insurance during this "in between time" ...

I stopped at the local insurance place today to let them know that I will not be renewing my renters insurance and asked them about medical insurance for the US (I had bought this in the past) ... The agent did some calling around and told me that since I will not have BC medical that they can't insure me and that he doesn't know of any insurance in BC that would work for my situation ....

What have others done during this "in between time" ?? Is there some sort of insurance that we can purchase for a month when I get down to the US ??

I bought CAA, then bought thier out of country insurance. It was good for 6 months, have to cross over after the 6 months back to canada. I hadn't yet given up my residency when I purchased it... so technically.... LOL

A friend of mine did the same, bought out of country travel insurance at a travel agency, it cost her more than the CAA did tho. plus with CAA, all the benifits are available here, towing, run out of gas, lockout service etc. SO it was a double bonus. Worth a shot.

I havent had any since that expired, hubbys job keeps screwing us around on the benifits, apparently they kick in monday...after a year and a half of waiting for them....oh and check this out, my son comes next monday to live with us, they wont put im on the plan until he arives...its a week FFS.

I had medical insurance through my Royal Bank British Airways visa card, plus a top-up for extra stay-time from BCAA.

While you had this insurance was your Canadian Medical still active ??

Yes, it was. They didn't ask me about it though. I got it before I went for a long visit. If you're thinking of doing something like that, it would be worth talking to someone at the bank.

As an aside, I've been on my husband's medical since we got married ('cause I visit quite often and he has extended health benefits) but I'm still on my BC medical too.
