I can't find any information about getting a license in Colorado! All I found was that I have to wait 90 days until I'm allowed to apply, as only Colorado state residents are the only people eligible for Colorado licenses, and it takes 90 days for you to reach this requirement. But, that doesn't tell me much! I only have an Ontario G2, so i'm completely prepared to do a road test, but it would be nice to know whats expected of me.

Looking at this thread reminded me of what I need to do to get a Nebraska state licence! Well just peeked at the website and they are introducing new "security" measures June 22, 2009 and the price of drivers licences are going up to implement the security intitatives! Argh!

http://www.dmv.ne.gov/examining/pdf/verificationdocs.pdf

The one requirement that I am confused about is:

5. A valid, unexpired Record of Arrival and Departure in a valid foreign passport (I-94 or I-94A). If the I-94 or I-94A is stamped “Refugee” or the place of origin is Canada, the valid foreign passport is not required. Visas, Form I-151, I-94W or I-94 Border Crosser will not be accepted.

Are they saying a K-1 visa with 90 days validity for I-94 will not be accepted?

Looks like the only other way I will get my licence is the EAD card, or the other required for U.S proof of identification, when I get my military spouse ID card. Oh jeez I hope they don't require a state DL for a military ID card!:wacko:

In Florida I couldn't get a driver's license until I had my AOS NOA, but I could get a Florida resident card, which I had to return to them once they issued the DL. Even if you could get a DL using the I-94, it isn't much good to you because they can only authorize you until the expiry date.

Colorado New License Application

Colorado Identification Requirements

Thanks for the help! The second link didn't work for me however

The only really helpful thing it says is:

"11) Non-Citizens

Your valid foreign license, along with an International Driver's Permit, is only valid for 90 days in Colorado. After this period you must apply for a Colorado license."

What is an "International Driver's Permit"?

It says nothing about I-94's or Canadian licenses... I suppose what I'm looking for is, "hey, if you're from Ontario and have a G2 license and are coming to Colorado on a K-1 you need to do the following to get a license in Colorado.... " But of course nothing will be spelled out that easy for me

 Yeah. Wouldn't that be nice? Warlord is in Denver so he'll probably be able to help you out with specifics on this one but don't worry about an international driver's permit. It doesn't pertain to Canadians. Basically, you're good to go with your Canadian license until you get your CO license. It'####### or miss whether they make you take the test or not. Let us know how it turns out for you.

The problem I'm finding is that Colorado has recently been cracking down on illegals, so the process for proving legal residency is a lot tougher. I was doing some google searching and it looks like i'll need my EAD or GC before I can even apply... as my I-94 will be expired. Its like they mess with you on purpose! You can't apply for a license until you've been in the state for 90 days, but you can't apply with an expired I-94... Its an evil master plan!

So, I will drive on my Ontario license for a while and play stupid if there's a problem.... :innocent:

I believe your I-94 would work. It's not an I-94W that we get. And I think the I-94 border crosser would be something they give to Mexicans who are visiting the US.

Colorado definatly has gotten a lot stricter. From 12 or so years ago when first got here handing in my Ont licence at a mall kiosk and getting my 6 or so year Colorado DL, to then after getting my GC and Sept 12 thing happened, having to go to actual offices to get the new DL, to later having to provide my passport along with my current Colorado DL and waiting.

So yeah things definatly have gotten worse here in terms of getting a licence...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

You got lucky, Wookie. Florida requires that you produce an AOS NOA before they'll issue a license. The rules for Canadians no longer apply when you are immigrating. Too bad they took your Canadian license. I kept mine.

I think I could have said "Ontario GM licence means helicopter license.. I WANT MY US HELICOPTER LICENCE!!!" And they between the glib lady that I was dealing with and the depressed manager, they would have probably given it to me!

We should have the moderator start a "Driver's License and Car Registration" guide where we can all start compiling the following info. It may be helpful to VJ'ers in the future.

DRIVER's LISENCE APPLICATION:

Your State:

Your County:

Your Original License was from (Country):

Did they take your licence or let you keep it:

What documents did you provide to get your license:

Did you have to take a written test:

Did you have to take a road test:

Did you have to take a vision test:

Did you get a full license:

Did you get a conditinal license:

Did you get a ID card only:

How much did you pay in fees:

CAR REGISTRATION:

Your State:

Your County:

Where did you do the registration:

Did you receive car import documents at POE:

Was your car inspected:

What documents did you require:

How much tax did you pay:

How much was the registration:

How much was the license plate:

Any additional costs:

Did you successfuly register your vehicle:

The driver's license and car registration guide is a great idea. But anyone can do it..... not just a moderator. I nominate the guy who came up with the idea.

Wow. Sounds like I had it good here in IL. I just went in, gave them my documents, paid them $10 and wrote the rules of the road test. I passed it and they took my picture. I left with my DL that has to be renewed in 2013.

Go figure!

Now that we have settled in Chicago I am about to do the same thing, exchange my Alberta license for an Illinois one. What driver's license office did you go to? It seems like they knew the procedure for Canadians.

oh oh definately keep me posted :) Since i'm a be moving eventually to mount prospect. i've had my licence for 15 years..i'd be interested in which tests they take..
