Backwards Question- Visiting my fiancé in Canada

I am planning on visiting my fiancé over the summer in Canada. I am the American.

Since we are engaged and doing this whole Visa process, do I need to show my ties to the US when going to Canada? Is it the same both ways?

This is probably a ridiculous question, but maybe Canada will want to make sure I go back home!

Thanks!

Probably a sound idea. Bring a letter from your employer, return ticket if you're flying, same thing as folks are told to bring when they visit their US partner.

Easier to be prepared then be held up or worse - turned back at the border!

I would. Canadian customs tend to be a bit easier than US, but they do basically operate on the same principle. Plus it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. I never had a problem, but I was asked more questions when I was entering Canada to visit my fiance (now husband) than I ever was on any previous visit. I was always flying and always had a round trip ticket, which probably helps.

The last time I went to see him in Canada I was asked who I was visiting and I told them it was my boyfriend (he was at the time). I was thinking that if I say I'm visiting my fiance they might question me further. I already have a letter from my employer for the I-134, plus I just got my contract for next school year (I'm a school counselor) so I can bring those!

Yep - I know a couple times my now husband was asked more then the usual questions by Canada customs...but never denied. Towards the end, He had been back and forth so many times, I don't know if the frequency of his trips was supportive evidence that he was a regular traveller.

Bring what you have for peace of mind, but a return ticket should suffice! After I got my Visa and couldn't visit here anymore, my fiancee came to Canada monthly to visit me until I moved, he never was asked any questions except where he worked.

It couldn't hurt but my wife and I went for the CR-1 visa and I visited her every single weekend and never had any problems going to Canada, only coming home. Good luck!

My wife has been back since June 5, 2007. Now we're just livin' man, L I V I N :)

I am constantly grilled by the Canadian Immigration people, customs people just waive me through - nothing to declare. I learned after the first trip NOT to mention that I am visiting someone. The 1st I said I was visiting my GF and then the questions started. Where did you meet her, how long, what you are doing here, are you coming for medical operations, and on, and on, and on........

20 minutes later the woman finally, reluctantly let me through.

Subsequent visits I a have just said, going to Whistler to go skiing for 4 days. They don't ask any more questions. Although the trip before last they asked an odd one, have you ever been to court? I am like hell NO! Gave me back my passport, and then his screened beeped. I walked very quickly away from the guy. :D

When my fiance came across the Canadian border for the first time to meet me he was grilled and send to secondary. But, in the Canadian border official's defense, the case did look quite suspicious. He was coming to Canada to meet a girl he met on the internet, and was living in North Carolina with a NC license but had Colorado state license plates on his car. Weird thing, they asked him for my phone number and called me to confirm I was expecting a visitor... So, it seems like you can snake your way out of bad situations in Canada better than you can with American border guards. It helps that 3 of my aunts work at the Peace Bridge and one is an immigrations officer :)

Nice to hear they called you! I mean what if he was some maniac stalker, that was out to kill you!! They were doing their job well.

My fiance just gets waived on through. Always just gets asked, where are you going and how long are you staying and that's it!

One time the border guards even asked him when he planned to make an honest woman out of me when he said he was going to visit his g/f.
