Egypt mulls toughening Hezbollah stance

CAIRO, April 15 (UPI) -- The Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah may no longer be welcome in Egypt after Cairo completes a terrorism probe against it, sources say. An unnamed Egyptian official quoted in Cairo's Al Ahram newspaper said the uncovering of an alleged Hezbollah plot to carry out anti-Israeli attacks in Egypt might result in members of group, including Lebanese government ministers, being banned from the country, The Jerusalem Post reported Wednesday.

Al Ahram quoted the official as saying that after the interrogation of Hezbollah suspects in Egypt is finished, "treatment of the organization will be different from what it has been in the past."

The toughening Hezbollah stance taken by Egypt reportedly may reflect larger issues it has with Hezbollah's sponsor, Iran. Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit told London's Asharq Alawsat newspaper Tuesday that "Iran, and Iran's followers want Egypt to become a maid of honor for the crowned Iranian queen when she enters the Middle East," the Post said.
