My husband is taking copy of I-864 package which includes 2005 to 2007 tax transcripts, pay stubs, employment letter, etc. Additionally, since I filed extension for 2008, he has copy of all extensions as well as 2008 W2s, 1099s, etc.

Good Luck :)

Thank you again everyone. I'll try to post interview reviews as soon as possible.

My husband plans to stay at the embassy for 2 days (the interview day and the day after interview) to see if he can pick up visa/passport by hand instead of waiting for it to arrive in email.

Counting and getting nervous....

hi there. it depends whether your husband filed his taxes already. if not, you get an automatic extension if you were married at the end of 2008 and you want to be treated as a resident for tax purposes and you were out of the US in April. you get to file until june 15, without filing anything. if you can't make it by then, submit an extension form by then f4868 i believe. if he filed there is another procedure and i will look into it after my interview. now concentrating all effort and energy on tomorrow morning.

Jiskat, I am pretty much newbie to the whole tax things. But here is bit more information on this topic that I understand/learned...

1. By April 15th, you either file your tax returns or file tax extension. In year 2009, if you file extension for tax return of 2008, then you get till October 15th (yes, 6 month automatic extension) to file your taxes. Filing extension does not mean you don't have to pay any taxes if you owe. Filing taxes means, if you have to pay governmnet, you can pay the estimated amount and then file the paperwork at later time (or by October 15th).

2. Since April 15th is already gone, there are couple things possible: 1)your husbad has already filed taxes as single. If so, he can amend it later when you come to US and have your Social Security #. 2) He got an ITN # for you (an ID that can be used as SS for the tax filing purpose) and filed as married). In this case, there is no adjustment needed at later date. But in order to get ITN #, I believe beneficiary has to sign some forms. I am not aware of details since we didn't go this route either). 3) Your husband didn't file taxes. I hope this is not the case, because Embassy may not like this. If this is the case, he will have to pay penalty if he owes any money to government. In general, I don't think it is desirable situation to not file taxes.

3. For me, I had to file extension to both federal (form 4686) and state taxes (form D400). It's pretty straight forward and no long forms to fill out plus you can do these online. This is the first time I've ever done it, so I am not sure if I'll run into issues when I actually file taxes. I wanted to file taxes as married filing jointly but we did not have enough time to get ITN # since I learned about this whole tax process very late in the game.

champi and jiskat

i have consulted an irs rep on the issue and i myself am an accountant - if one of the spouses is out of the country on april 15 the couple gets an automatic extension to file and pay until june 15. it may not be very popular but is absolutely acceptable. don't know if it works for you. otherwise the options champi listed are all correct.

champi and jiskat

i have consulted an irs rep on the issue and i myself am an accountant - if one of the spouses is out of the country on april 15 the couple gets an automatic extension to file and pay until june 15. it may not be very popular but is absolutely acceptable. don't know if it works for you. otherwise the options champi listed are all correct.

Wow, nice to have accountant in the house :D By the way, just to confirm, if you specifically file extensions, then the deadline is October 15th, not June 15th, correct? Sorry to bug you, I know you're busy prepping for interview...
