Right! I am considering whether to take my UK PS3 to US or not. Has anyone taken theirs? If so, how did it work out for you?

Please share :)

Hi,

I am heading to the US in a few weeks. I am taking mine. Modern TV's these days done have a problem accepting PAL or NTSC. However, if you are connecting through HDMI, it is a universal standard world-wide. The NRSC/PAL?SECAM issues are a things of the past with HDMI.

The only thing are the Blu-raymovies which are region coded. Have to buy a cheap player, I suppose.

Voltage is the same. The PS3 power supply is rate 110-230v. You just nee a travel adapter. No transfoprmer needed

My husband took his from Ireland to the USA. There was no big problems, but two smaller ones:

- for online play, it kept directing him to European servers.

- The converter plug was a bit wobbly, so we had to tape it down.

Thank you all for your responses. Can you please confirm that all PS3's have universal voltage converters? I checked my PS3 (its the UK version that was released in March 07 - 60 GB) and it says 220 - 240 W.

Thanks :)

Universal adapters, like the one for my laptop, read 100-240V. Meaning yours, like the one for my Nintendo DS, can only be used in the UK. You'll have to buy a new adapter for it when you get to the US. Also remember you won't be able to play any US games on it as they are NTSC specific unlike your PS which is PAL.

Wikipedia has a very detailed article on PlayStation3 about what the various model numbers are capable of doing and which power supplies convert or don't. Google PS3 and find the Wikipedia article. Seems some models will work and others won't. New power supplies are sold on eBay, but your bigger issue will probably be the NTSC/PAL thing and region coding.

The only way not to connect to UK servers is shange you country of origin or create a new account with USA address etc. I have Jap/UK/USA that way.

Modern TV's these days done have a problem accepting PAL or NTSC

Beware, this is true of European tellys but not so true of US TVs. My wife's relatively new US tv would accept a PAL60 signal but NOT a bog-standard PAL50 signal no matter what. Check the frequency of the PS3's output - it's almost certainly 60Hz but if it's 50Hz, you may have problems...

Also remember there's no SCART over here, you may need to use a composite cable (the one with white, red and yellow cables) or RGB (red, green and blue for video with the white and red for audio).

The majority of them are not, actually.

Here's a list (not comprehensive by any means) that show what's region locked and not.

http://bluray.liesinc.net/index.php?region=a

I've used it when ordering UK Blu-Rays and they've been right every time.

Great for ordering online... Not so great for impulse buying :he:
