Well it apparently was sufficient offense for that ex-mil nut to whip out a hunting knife and cut down the US flag outside that store a year or two ago, while the hispanic proprieters looked on (and likely hoped that they wouldn't get stabbed).

People in the UK wear the Union Jack flag to football matches and noone seems to mind.

Even here you can buy stars and stripes socks and underwear... If its so offensive I wonder why noone has taken a tank of gasoline to their nearest Target and had a bonfire in the clothing section.

An upside down U.S. flag signifies "Help" or "Distress". Not sure if an upside down UK flag has any meaning.

Well you can't really put the Union Jack upside down. Its symmetrical.

If I remember back into the mists to my time as a Guide, I think that's not quite true, there is something about the thick and thin lines that makes it possible to ensure that it is flown 'the right way up'.

I love the idea of flag pole etiquette too, how quaint :)

MC ... how right you are ... the Union Jack has a proper orientation and is not symmetrical.

:secret: Wonder if PP failed flag school as a youth?

"While the flag appears symmetric, the white lines above and below the diagonal red are different widths. On the side closest to the flagpole (or on the left when depicted on paper), the white lines above the diagonals are wider; on the side furthest from the flagpole (or on the right when depicted on paper), the converse is true. Thus, rotating the flag 180 degrees will have no change, but if mirrored the flag will be upside-down.

Placing the flag upside down is considered lèse majesté and is offensive to some,[4][5] However, it can be flown upside down as a distress signal. While this is rare, it was used by groups under siege during the Boer War and during campaigns in India in the late 18th century."

Not to mention underwear, tasteless too :)

Gives new meaning to "Flagpole"....

loooooooooooooooooooooool!

(Sorry....channeling Eric)

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Presumably if someone is caught wearing stars and stripes underwear - an enraged mob of 'concerned' citizesn will give the offender a sound beating, and leave him stripped on the street.

The offending underwear will then be washed, pressed and strung up on a flagpole (the right way up).

Yes - how does this whopper taste?

Like a$$

*mutters to self*

I'm not going to ask how PP knows what a$$ tastes like .... I'm not going to ask how PP knows what a$$ tastes like ....

You don't do figures of speech do you.

Flag school..

What's that when its at home?

Dib, dib dib!

The thing is, the British are not so insecure as to require the symbolism of say a flag to underpin their Britishness, so, flying a Union Jack upside down, letting it drop to the ground or having someone else's flag fly above it doesn't somehow signal that our Britishness is under threat so we don't feel the need to defend our flag as if it were a holy cow :)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

It is the one symbol Americans can invest their hopes and pride in. We don't have the Crown to get all gawgaw over, so we need something else to focus our national identity on. I suppose if someone took a dump on the steps of Buckingham Palace, few Brits would shrug it off as mere immaturity.

Well you'd probably be arrested for indecency, so it would be a moot point.

That said I don't know too many people who are "gawgaw" about the royal family. I'm certainly not.

The only time there was real public outrage over national identity stuff was when someone vandalised the London cenotaph during one of the G8/G20 riots a few years ago.

Burning the flag (or whatever) doesn't really get people's hackles up that way - though to be fair there is a good degree of nationalism in Britain.

I would imagine there would be a little outrage by the nutty elements. For most, though, that would about sum it up. The monarchy is not sacred.

Personally I was always more offended by people abusing historical landmarks - I went out to Stonehenge at the summer solstice in 2003, the last time you could actually go up to the stones (and first time I had been there) and some yob was urinating against one of the triptychs while his mate (beer can in hand) staggered across the top of another.

I heard that Ozzy Osbourne caused great offence over here by urinating on the Alamo.

Mexico slams Burger King for 'whopper' of insult

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexico is protesting what it says is a whopper of an insult.

An advertisement for Burger King's chili-flavored "Texican" burger that has run in Europe shows a small wrestler dressed in a cape resembling a Mexican flag. The wrestler teams up with a lanky American cowboy twice his height to illustrate the cross-border blend of flavors.

"The taste of Texas with a little spicy Mexican," a narrator's voice says.

The much-taller cowboy boosts the wrestler up to reach high shelves and clean tall windows, while the Mexican helps the cowboy open a jar.

Mexico's ambassador to Spain said Monday he has written a letter to Burger King's offices in that nation objecting to the ad and asking that it be removed. Jorge Zermeno told Radio Formula that the ads "improperly use the stereotyped image of a Mexican."

Press officials at Burger King Corp. offices in Miami, Florida, and Madrid, Spain, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Burger King is known for its signature Whopper hamburger.

One of the things that most angered Mexican officials was a print edition of the ad showing the wrestler wearing what appear to be a Mexican flag as a cloak.

"We have to tell these people that in Mexico we have a great deal of respect for our flag," Zermeno said.

Mexico has very strict rules about using the flag. In 2008, the government fined a foreign-owned publishing house, Random House Mondadori SA, for showing disrespect to the country's flag in a video posted online.

The video showed a literature fan wearing a Mexican flag like a cape as he barges into a book signing and rips a piece of cloth from the coat of Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho.

It is not the first time that fast-food outlets have offended Mexican sensibilities.

Mexicans and other Hispanics in the United States objected to a Taco Bell ad from the 1990s that featured a pint-sized talking Chihuahua that spoke with a Mexican accent.

And the actual commercial. Doesn't seem to bad to me...

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.
