I've heard of so called "honor" killings in some Arab countries (Jordan, Egypt) but I've never heard of one in Morocco. Has anyone here heard of one there?

I'm thinking if not, that's good evidence it's a cultural phenomenon. Similar: I've never heard of female genital mutilation in Morocco but have heard of it in Egypt. And of course it's endemic in sub-Saharan Africa.

that`s true , and if you ask why it is simply because the Ottoman Empire spread from Anatolia and the caucasus across ,S,yria, iraq ,Arabia , extending its borders deep into Europe captured the whole Northern Africa except Morocco.

i hope that helps.

The Moroccan penal law recognizes killing someone for honor as a condition that lightens the sentence. It applies to only husband /wife adultery, when yo catch the cheater on bed and with witnesses. he/she who commits the crime still gets jail time. I guess that's why there is not as much honor killing. Still, every now and then you hear some stories about this issue.

in morocco honor killed are very rare , u can hear of them especialy in the countrysides where people are still conserved. but in the cities no. the djustice is against that and doesn`t take that in consideration , it is just a crime that it should have its punshement not like in other arab countries like egypt.

Terrible and just wrong.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

OK, thanks for the information. That's pretty much what I thought, that "honor" killing is not a Moroccan phenomenon.

Lots of people on the intarwebs think it's an Islamic thing, but IMHO it's more of a cultural thing. Perhaps those perpetrating it try to find religious justification, but really there is nothing in Islam permitting or approving it.

Morocco was one of the areas where I worked as a human rights advocate. The Moroccan Mudawanna still allows for honor killing in cases where a spouse is caught in the act of adultery. Article 418 was amended to provide the same extenuating circumstances for the murder of injury of the adulterous spouse and lover to the wife as well as to the husband. Prior to this amendment, only the husband could be excused for committing a murder.

They still happen, but they are not reported and no statistics are kept. Also, there is this:

http://www.alarabiya.net/articles/2009/02/07/65922.html

Female rights associations in Morocco have called for the annulment of a law that acquits a rapist for raping a minor if he marries her, and argued it is like rewarding the rapist for the crime.

Rape is a crime and its perpetrator has to be penalized by law, said Fouzia Assouli, head of the Moroccan Democratic League for Women's Rights. Marriage following rape is an equally serious crime, she added.

"How can a girl be made to marry a man who raped her?" she told AlArabiya.net. "This is like rewarding him for his crime."

Without a doubt, and not limited to Muslim countries either. I worked honor killings in Brazil, too.
