I-551 stamp when NOA1 not received

It seems Chicago office only gives out 60-day stamps and we'd need it for a year as we're planning on traveling in Sept/Oct and my GC expires in the end of May.

Anyone knows of a by-law that says they have to give me 1-yr I-551 stamp in case I never received my NOA1 (40 days so far)?

They were nice enough to do a Service request but am not too hopeful anything will come out of it -- had service requests for my GC that was a no-show and in the end had to involve a congressman before I got it close to a year after entering the country.

Why??? The I-751 NOA 1 letter extends the green-card validity for an aditional year, all you need is expired green-card and I-751 NOA1 letter to travel, and continue working.

You will receive a notice of receipt for the form stating that "Your alien card is extended one year - employment and travel authorized". Keep the receipt with your green card. If by some chance you are not approved within a year you will want to make an InfoPass appointment to go to your Local Office to request an I-551 stamp in your passport. This does happen as it sometimes it takes over a year to be approved. After your NOA extension expires, this is your only evidence of legal status which you are required to have, by law. This happens occasionally, that a case takes over a year, but it's rare. Local Offices will not give an I-551 stamp is you have another type of evidence of status (ie, expired Green Card + extension letter).

Because I HAVE NOT received the NOA1, that's why I need the stamp - makes sense now?

Milimelo,

I went to Chicago office too, because my GC was also a no show.

My replacement GC, you guessed it, a no show as well.

They still would not give me more that 60 days either. I travel a lot and I am running out of passport pages. And to get a new passport, it takes a minimum of 6 months... :crying:

Did you go to the downtown center?

I am thinking to try another one on the area next time, may be it's just that one USCIS office which is weird that way.

Rika,

yes, I went to the downtown center. They're notorious for not giving one-year stamps. Hopefully other centers (not even sure where the second closest one would be - Milwaukee?) do give one-year stamps. That's the reason I was asking if there is a by-law that says they have to give 1-yr stamps so I could print it out and bring with me.

Yesterday we received both NOA1s - even though I clearly filled the send to c/o section and had them send everything to my work address (so my firm's name is there), someone did not include it on NOA1 and the building management returned it --they're certainly not going to look for a first name initial and a very common last name among over 2500 employees in five companies! They also sent me AR-11 to fill when I did not even move!

Milimelo,

thank you for the update.

In case you ever need it again - there is another USCIC local office near Midway.

I am still cardless,

Really? I know about Application Support Center at Pulaski where I went for biometrics. It was a pretty strange office - no real security, just a couple of ladies taking your fingerprints and picture.
