Entering US as permanent resident and passport expiration date?

Hello,

After coming to US in 2007 on K1 visa, I am planning to visit family back in Russia this

Summer (July-Aug 09). I now have my permanent resident card. But my Russian

(international/travel) passport will expire during Dec 09.

My question is - will there be any problem returning back to US

during Aug 09 if the passport expires during Dec 09?

There seem to be like 6-month passport expiry requirement when

entering US for visitors (but may be its only valid for visitor visas).

But is there any such requirement for permanent residents?

You can come back in as long as your passport is valid and so is your green card. However, it might be a good idea to renew it while you are visiting Russia.

Doesn't appear there is such a requirement for LPRs.

Why not renew it anyway and remove the doubt. They wil most likely credit your new passport with the additional few months.

I wonder if getting/renewing your international passport in Russia/through a consulate is as much of a pain as Ukrainian... Might not be that easy

Maybe, I only have a British perspective. I would get mine renrewed at the conulate before I leave if I were in a similar situation. However they seem to have a 3 or 4 months before they travel so they have time.

Definitely wouldn't hurt to play it safe if everything is in order.

We had been travelling around before coming here. I've got some time on my passport but I've run out of pages.

I did some reading on my consulate's web page this weekend and realized I needed to petition for permission to immigrate from Ukrainian authorities first...

Which is fine - it sounds like there is a procedure in place to do it through your consulate but I need a letter from my ex-employer(s) in Ukraine stating I don't owe them anything. Sounds like it'll be a major pain trying to contact them

I only see two problems with trying to come back with an expired passport, first is leaving Russia, second is entering the USA. But the second won't be a problem if you cannot leave Russia.

I don't think it is going to be expired but only a few months left. Some places won't let you enter if the passport has less than 6 months left. However if you are a LPR you should not have any problems but its better to be safe than sorry.

First, getting passport renewal in Russia is a major pain in the rear, so I would not attempt that.

Second, I was all set to send in the passport here to San Francisco consulate, got all papers ready, bought the money

order for renewal fee etc - then on Sunday noticed on the consulate website that they had changed the requirements -

require more photos, reduced the fee etc - so I would now have to redo some of the paperwork and am just not

in mood to do this again.

From most responses, seems like as long as the passport is valid and unexpired, there won't be any issue

leaving Russia and entering US for the US permanent residents.
