Hi from Canada!

Well, I can't exactly say I'm new here. I've been using VJ for visa information for the last little while but this is my first post! I've read so many interesting stories here so I thought I would share mine.

I'm a Canadian girl born and raised. Last October I met the love of my life online. He messaged me on a website thinking I lived in Tennessee, but unfortunately when I wrote "UofT" on my profile, I meant University of Toronto. He lives in Kentucky, and despite the distance, we became great friends. He was kind, caring, supportive and I fell in love instantly. I was in denial for a while having been in a relationship at the time, but when that relationship fell to pieces, Chris was there for me and deep down I always knew he was the one. We literally got engaged sight unseen, sort of, I actually asked him to marry me one night on webcam. We do realize that this sounds crazy to pretty much everyone else, but to us it was true love.

In January Chris traveled from KY to visit me in Toronto for the weekend of my birthday. Meeting him was, well, more than I could have dreamed of. I was visiting my friend Jen in London Ontario, and from there I was to meet Chris in Toronto. The night before we were to meet, Chris called to tell me he missed a connecting bus (yes, he was taking a 24 hour bus ride up to Canada for me), so his bus would now be going through London Ontario. I didn't say anything to him at the time, but my plan was to get on his bus in London. That morning I got up, packed my things, and with great anticipation, I headed to the bus station. My friend Crystal came with me to see me off and when we got to the bus station, I left her with my bags and got in line for the ticket. As I was standing in line, my cell phone rang. As usual, I answered the phone, but when I said hello, there was silence. I said hello once more... silence. Suddenly I looked up, and there he was about 10 feet away on a pay phone, staring back at me with that beautiful smile of his. I just stood there in shock. I turned to Crystal, told her to look at the pay phone, and Chris quickly hung up the phone and rang over to me. We hugged and stayed there for what seemed like forever, but it was the most amazing moment of my life.

Finally we got on the bus and had the greatest 4 days. On the morning of my birthday, he took my shopping for an engagement ring. When he had to leave it, letting him go was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Nonetheless, we embraced, both sobbing and I turned to walk away. There is one moment that I will never forget. As I walked out the doors of the greyhound station to the truck with my dad waiting for me, I turned to look back at him and in that moment I could feel my heart break.

Anyway, I guess I'm getting a little bit carried away. A few weeks later, for Valentine's Day, we agreed that he would come back. The morning we were supposed to meet in Toronto, as I was on my way from Madoc Ontario in the truck with my dad, I got a call from Customs. They asked me a million questions about whether I was waiting for a visitor and who he was and how we met etc. After the questions the customs officer simply said "Chris will call you back"..So i assumed all was good. Unfortunately, Chris called an hour or so later and told me that they would not allow him to enter the country. The problem was this: 2 days before visiting me back in January, Chris procured himself a nice little DUI on his criminal record. They allowed him into the country the first time because it had not been processed into the system yet so there was no record to show it. This time, it was on his record and there was no way he was going to be allowed to cross the border. After I had my little meltdown, I decided to travel to the border and meet him in Buffalo. Once again we had an amazing week and when it was time for us to leave the Buffalo/Niagara Falls area, I couldn't do it. So I traveled with Chris to his hometown in Kentucky. It was great, and I ended up staying in the U.S. for a month. 3 weeks after I got there we decided to elope. I bought myself a black cocktail dress, some red roses, a couple of decorations, a tiara, a veil and we got Chris a white tie and everything was perfect. We wrote our own vows, bought two wedding bands, and in the 5 minutes it took to marry us in front of 3 people, I was finally Mrs. Kay-Lee Burgess.

So now here we are, married on February 27th, 2009, a couple of months later, preparing to file my visa papers. I'm back in Canada, and Chris is working in Kentucky. When we both have free time we spend the time on webcam, often working through the visa paperwork. We're just about ready to send everything out and the anticipation is killing me. But I have to say, if it weren't for VJ I would be incredibly lost! So anyway, now that I've rambled on and on, I guess I'll just say Hi and I hope I didn't get too carried away! lol

It's nice to finally introduce myself here and best of luck to everyone!

Kay Burgess
