Each university has different guidelines, so you should check with the admissions office at any universities you are interested in.

Also, you will have to pay the higher rates because you will not be considered a "resident student" until you've been here for a year (I believe it's a year).

It's so nice to see someone call it "university" and NOT "college"!!! University is the Canadian way and college is the American way. I had a hard time saying "my daughter is in college" when she transferred to a university here.

Have to contact each school, as each may have different requirements. I was able to get the in-state tuition rate based on my wifes residency.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Almost certainly! The one thing they will ask you for is a SSN, an American Social Security number. It usually only takes 2 weeks to get an SSN so after that you should be ok. Additionally you should know if you are taking the classes to give yourself something to do and not really for a degree program, you most likely want to go to the continuing education (i.e. night classes) department. They have way less strict requirements for admissions. The usual requirements are breathing, speak English, have money, Ok you are accepted. By the way this is how I was accepted by Harvard University. I started in the continuing education department, then transferred into the Day (full time) student program. No SAT's, entrance application essays, etc... :D

Almost all universities will require a certified copy of your high school transcript and a certified copy of your university transcript. Most of the time they will not accept these copies from you. Your high school or university needs to send them directly to the university. However they will most likely do a conditional acceptance based on a photocopy of your high school and or university transcript.

Usually most universities will allow for continuing education students to register for 1 or 2 day classes without a waiver from the registrar. Every university is different and you will need to talk with them.

Community colleges are an entirely different animal. There requirements are extermly low. Breathing and have money, sometimes the breathing is optional. Every state is different on the residency requirements to determine the lower tuition fee - if you want to go to a state university. Almost all states all for marriage as a qualifier for lower tuition fee. So you might want to wait till after you get married before applying.

Best of luck to you.
