The last few days I have been endlessly searching this site, reading the guides, FAQs and other experiences.

I just had a question about Question 20 on the form - "Your fiancé(e) will apply for a visa abroad at the American embassy or consulate at"

Now - does this mean the closest embassy (ie Toronto), or one of the two consulates that actually process the K-1 (Vancouver/Montreal)?

If it is the later, and I chose the closest for myself (Montreal), does that mean that is where I will get my intreview, or will I end up like someone else recently on the forum with a Vancouver process?

If it doesn't matter, would it just be easier to fill in the closest consulate, in hopes of actually having an interview scheduled there?

My boyfriend and I have just begun discussing this process. We actually just found out about this Visa. Previously we were looking into other things, but the K-1 seems to be the most logical for our case. Since we're getting together for a weekend in May, I thought we could gather information to fill out the I-129f together, and then send it away that month. I'd like to apply sooner, but like most, I have a paranoia that it would compromise my ability to freely visit him like I have been the last 6 months.

For K1 the consulate jurisdiction is as follows:

Manitoba and west - Vancouver

Ontario and east- Montreal.

Don't worry I asked the same question too when I first joined lol

I-751 file: 11/07/11

NOA1 date: 11/10/11

Biometrics: 11/30/11

Approval: 08/17/12

Hold what you got and maintain.

Congratulations on your engagement and welcome to Visa Journey:-).

We have all been in your shoes or similar ones at one time and are happy to share from our own experiences to help make this process easier for others:-).

You would put down the US Consulate in Montreal for the K-1 if that is the one you are closer to. It is supposed to work that applications from east of Manitoba go to Montreal and applications from west of Manitoba go to Vancouver. As you will discover, occasionally USCIS makes a mistake and things might go someplace they are not supposed to. The US Consulate in Toronto doesn't process immigration or immigration intent visas - just Montreal (K-1s, K-3s and CR-Is) and Vancouver (K-1s and K-3s). All interviews are held in one of those two locations, much as it would be so much more convenient for many of us if they were held at the Consulates closest to where we live(d). So, plan on a trip to Montreal somewhere in your future.

You should be able to visit with each other even after your US fiance submits the I-129f and after the NOA2 approval of the I-129f. If you are crossing into the US just be prepared to present proof of your ties to Canada. Carrying a copy of your I-129f and the NOAs actually does seem to count as evidence of your intent to follow immigration procedure so make sure you have a copy of that as well when you travel to visit each other.

Good luck on your journey and don't hesitate to ask any questions that come up along the way!

(Where are you currently in Canada? I grew up in Kingston, Ontario, lived in St. Catharines for a while and then moved here from Chatham, Ontario. We have a number of Canadian VJers going through the process right now and one of them may actually live near you).

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Well.. haha.. I was born in Sarnia, Ontario - lived outside of it in Petrolia for 5 years, and Brigden for 9 years. My parents divorced and I then moved to Newmarket for a year, Oshawa for a year, and finally my mom and step-dad settled in Pontypool, which is in the Kawartha lakes area. I went to University at Trent, in Peterborough, for 4 years while living in Pontypool. Then I went to Humber College in Toronto - lived in Mississauga for one year while getting my Funeral Director's license. Now I have been living in Blenheim since May for my funeral director internship. I work mostly in Chatham, but occasionally get to work in Blenheim and Ridgetown.

After my internship, likely moving back to Pontypool. Obviously it is my goal to re-locate to the USA with my love, which would be the tiny yet historic state of Maryland.

Yeah Kathryn, St. Catharines represent!

When I filled the petition I put Toronto. That was due to a lack of research on my part... combined with a little bit of wishful thinking! It doesn't really matter what you put, they'll just send your file to K-1 processing consulate closest to you. Although I've heard of them making mistakes.

As far as traveling to the US goes, many of us have never been stopped and asked for proof of ties to Canada. But, its definitely not smart to travel without them, you never know if they'll ask.

Welcome to VJ!

Hi, I just wanted to add a note on this thread... Does anyone have the actual website, or info of something that says on the official websites that it's only Vancouver or Montreal that does the K1s? I can't seem to find it anywhere either :(

Hi - you can find that information on the Vancouver consulate website:

Fiancé(e) Visas

The U.S. Consulate General in Vancouver processes fiancé(e) (K1) and spouse (K3) cases for citizens of Canada, or aliens who are Canadian permanent residents. Applicants must also be residing in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Yukon or the Northwest Territories. All other applicants in Canada are processed at the U.S. Consulate General in Montreal. U.S. Consulate General Vancouver
