Hi all. My fiancée is going to be coming here from India on the 28th. We have been trying to figure out what he should bring with him that he can't get here in the states. The only thing we can really think of is a pressure cooker. Can anyone give me any ideas on what else he should bring?

=)

Hi there,

My only recommendation is to start looking for an Indian grocery store in your area so you know that he can get all of his spices, rice, atta whenever he needs it. We brought a bunch back from India with it that way we could have a supply while we found a store around here. We also brought the little spice containers, which I'm sure you can find somewhere here, but it was easier to bring them from there.

Tell him to bring with him all the spices, you get them here but they are ten times more than what you would find in india, he can get 250 grams of each spice and that will last him for about 2 years :), if he is from southern india i strongly suggest him to get snacks that he loves as its difficult to get them here.... i miss banana chips [ My mom sent me 2 packs and they just vanish ;)]

If you are from California you can take him to artezia [ little india] you get almost everything there and its best value.. even a pressure cooker for about $35 and all brands.. we got one from there and also some indian plates and cups as my husband loves to eat and drink from them.

Hello,

I applied for my fiance, he is in India too. the NVC sent his case to India on 4/01/2009. but he hasn't heard anything from the embassy yet, it has been two weeks.

will you please tell me why he hasn't heard any form them and the time frame.

thank you all

shabana

Hi Shabana. I would say post this in the consulate forum. I can't say why you haven't heard from them it could take a couple weeks for them to process the forms. I also don't know what consulate your applying through. If you really want to know where the paperwork is just call the consulate. It took about 2 weeks to get packet 3. We already have the visa and never received packet 4. It's still in the mail. I figure he will get it after he has arrived here in the US haha.

There is an Indian store close by called Spices of Asia that has a ton of stuff even good masalas. They also have banana chips :P. I was just there today picking up a few little snacks and stuff for him as a surprise when he gets here. I got him some milk cake which he loves. I heard of a place in Queens called Patel Brothers and there store is huge from what I understand. We are going to check it out when he gets here. He is not from south India he is from Gujarat. I am not sure but I think they might be able to ship food check out their website.

The problem with the spices is I have never cooked Indian food before so I am not sure which spices would be best for him to bring that we would use often enough to get a 2 years supply of. What would you suggest?

Alemi, sometimes it takes 3-4 weeks for them to do something after the case arrives at the Consulate. Try immediately sending an email with your case number and asking what the status is.

dagnytaggart, yes pretty much everything is available here, except the pressure cookers just rock back and forth and don't whistle like the Indian ones (cook for 3 whistles, 4 whistles etc). Once here, a rice cooker is a super handy thing to get - we got ours at Walmart. Also we couldn't find my honey's favorite Priya pickles in any of the 5-6 Indian grocery stores here in our city (only ones that expired in 2006!) but I don't know if you can bring the oily pickles on the plane. Good quality, inexpensive idlee cookers are hard to come by here, that would be a better thing to stuff the luggage with rather than a pressure cooker!

Make sure to bring all the original official paperwork just in case (school and birth certificates, etc.). Keeping a joint bank account in India (joint with some family member staying there) is handy for sending money over to India later.

I think North and South Indian spices are similar - you can look at recipes online. Sure the spices are expensive here but what to do - keeping spices for years makes them less tasty - they should be replaced every six months at least. We love South Indian food and we always have a full supply at home of the following: coriander powder (dhania), cumin (jeera), mustard seeds, fenugreek (methi), tumeric, dried red chilies, dried curry leaves, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, ginger plus urad daal (black gram), chana daal (dried chick peas), toor/tuvar daal, moong daal (green gram). The ready-made spice powder mix packets are sold here and oh so handy: masala, curry, pulav biryani, korma, sambar, rasam, etc., as well as idlee, dosa, vada mixes.

Welcome to Your Honey - Home Sweet Home! :D

Wow, great thanks so much!!! I will certainly have him get one of those Idlee cookers. I saw a bunch of spices at the store and they were fresh and not too expensive so I think we are better off just getting the spices here. The one thing I am having him bring is kashmiri saffron. So much cheaper there. Here is it $15 for a gram and there is it $6 so it makes more sense to bring it from there. The joint bank account is a great idea also. I will let him know about that tomorrow. He already has all his important papers put aside to bring with him.

And thanks for the welcome. We are so excited and I can't wait for him to be here I miss him so much!!

Who told you that pressure cookers are not easily available in US? A store chain here called, Target, has tons of them for cheap! Have bf bring souvenirs from the Taj Mahal or something. We sure dont have such things here. Peace. :star:

dagnytaggart - you can pretty much get everything here...it is just more expensive. My mom just gave me a bunch of stuff. I kept resisting but she kept insisting and I just couldn't fight her anymore. But I think, getting a pressure cooker is a great idea. We brought two.. a small 3 litre (for just the two of us) and another 5 litre one, big for more people if you like to entertain. Also, you can use the 5 litre for making Iddly's if you get the iddly plates. Another thing that is handy is the rolling pin or belan and chakla (although you can use the kitchen counter tops or cutting board) for making chapatis or puri's. If he is religious and prays then he should bring his gods/murtis.

Again, you get everything here. And if you have room and can carry more weight, do it else carry the other imp. stuff.

Good luck,
