Is Iowa the new California?

Iowa, a heartland state where corn has its own Web site, may be on an unlikely course to replace battered California as our national social and cultural bellwether.

January a year ago Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucuses launched Barack Obama, our first African American president, on the path to the White House.

While its embrace of corn-based ethanol has a certain amount of self-interest, the idea of using ethanol to power our cars radiates a hippie-like technological utopianism.

And now the Iowa Supreme Court has unanimously and forcefully thrown out a 1998 law that effectively banned gay marriage by limiting marriage to a man and a woman.

Iowa is only the third state where gay marriage is legal, putting it in the relatively raffish company of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Last November, supposedly liberal and cutting edge California passed a ballot proposition that restricted marriage in the state to opposite sex couples.

Iowans -- and you think of Iowa-born Grant Wood's painting "American Gothic" of the guy with the pitchfork and his pursed-mouth wife -- didn't seem all that rattled by the court's decision. There was none of that "end of civilization as we know it" alarmism. In fact, the Des Moines Register called the court's decision "both courageous and reassuring."

New Jersey, New Hampshire and Vermont are considering legalizing gay marriages but Iowa has relegated those supposed havens of Eastern sophistication to the me-too category.

Soon we expect that journal of urbanity, The New Yorker, to announce that in order to stay on top of the latest social and cultural trends, the magazine will from now on be written and edited especially for the little old lady in Dubuque.

I don't know who comes up with this #######. I've lived in Jersey most of my life and there's nothing "sophisticated" about this place.

That said, go Iowa.

Let's not try to kid our self here.

Even Liberal California rejected ** Marriage once they got the chance... and that was during an election with very low GOP turnout and record turnout for the more liberal team.

Who wants to move past past political speculation (spin) and place a bet on whether the folks of Iowa repair this injustice done by a liberal court?

To demonstrate how little reality ... and how much spin were to be found in this story one only need to enjoy this line;

<<There was none of that "end of civilization as we know it" alarmism. In fact, the Des Moines Register called the court's decision "both courageous and reassuring.">>

The day Media headlines speak for the average voter is a long way off.

Lets not pretend this is any thing more than it was; a well surveyed plan to bring this legal case against a small funded town, in a state known for a liberal leaning supreme Court.

Ironically, these very cases are what fuels people to change their constitutions to protect themselves from both Alternative marriage.. and judges who would take it upon themselves to impose it on the people without them having a say in the matter.

Here you can see the pattern of states that have changed their Constitution to prevent a legal loophole from change the will of the people in this important issues.

Yes...and there are a lot of liberal issues in which the vast majority of the electorate and citizenery do not want any part of in their community nor do they support. So well funded narrow special interst groups go "shopping" for a judge to impose it upon the unwashed masses whether they like it or not. Not much different than lobbyists with bags of cash go shopping for influence on Capitol Hill to buy legislation.

This is what modern America has degenerated into. How can one person with one vote defend themselves against this #######? Yes...so the elite and the judges know what is best for the unwashed masses. No they don't!

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995
